Quote :
"Texas men's basketball coach Rick Barnes did nothing to publicly rule himself out of the head coaching job at N.C. State on Wednesday but was reportedly working on a new contract to remain in Austin.
A Texas spokesman said Wednesday that there was nothing official to report about Barnes' contract and that any discussions between Barnes and Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds are a normal occurrence once the basketball season ends.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Wednesday that Barnes was working with Dodds on a new deal.

State is trying to replace Herb Sendek, who took the Arizona State job on Monday after 10 seasons at State and five consecutive NCAA Tournaments berths.

State athletics director Lee Fowler did not return phone calls from The N&O. Fowler is scheduled to speak about the coaching search on his weekly TV show Saturday. The show airs at noon on WRAZ.

Meanwhile former N.C. State players expressed a desire to see a basketball alumnus coaching the Wolfpack next season.

Denver Nuggets rookie Julius Hodge, the 2004 ACC Player of the Year, said Fordham coach Dereck Whittenburg should be considered.

Whittenburg missed the shot that ended up in Lorenzo Charles' hands to win the 1983 NCAA title for the Wolfpack. In July, Whittenburg signed a contract extension with Fordham that would take him through 2010.

"I hope to see the team playing hard basketball and winning [next season]," said Hodge, who was a prize recruit for former coach Herb Sendek.

"Whoever they decide to bring in, I hope the fan base can be a little more lenient on him, especially if he's winning like Coach Sendek did for 10 years," Hodge said.

Rodney Monroe, who played for Jim Valvano and Les Robinson at N.C. State from 1988-91, said that Sendek was exactly what State needed, namely a disciplinarian with a specific style of play, when he arrived in 1996.

"To play in that system with total ball control, it's kind of difficult for top 25 players to commit to that situation," Monroe said by phone from Spain, where he is playing professionally. "McDonald's All-Americans can run and jump and slam dunk and they don't want to be held back. If you can find a coach somewhere in the middle between the disciplinarian that Sendek was and free-for-all coach that Les was, they could have a lot."

Other former State players with good coaching backgrounds are Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan and Detroit Pistons assistant Sidney Lowe.

Both Hodge and Monroe said whoever becomes the next Wolfpack coach has to be prepared to battle for recruits and attention with ACC rivals Duke and UNC.

"I think it's going to be very tough for any coach coming in, playing in the backyard of Carolina and Duke and playing in their shadow," Hodge said. "I think Coach Sendek did a great job with the talent he had going to the NCAA Tournament the last five years and with us getting to the Sweet 16 [in 2005]. I think for the most part that wasn't appreciated by the fans."

so he can do it in practice but not in games? doubt it

I can say from experience that when playing sports, the coaches i liked most were never the coaches that got the team the furthest.

^^Ohhh yeah your experience is better than Julius Hodge, Cam Bennerman, and all our other players.

Nobody can explain why our players liked Herb so much?

Um, could it be because Herb brought them in? I'm just sayin', I probably would like a guy that I committed to play ball for.

i just don't understand why he could get fired up in practice, but not in games. is he scared the public would see him show emotion? every game i've seen, that priest that sits behind the bench gets more fired up than herb.

^he does get fired up in games

just b/c he doesn't get technicals doesn't mean he doesn't get fired up

i've seen him yell many a time

if you are a student here and saw the Technician the other day when it was announced he was leaving, every picture in the paper of him (esp. the big one on the front page and the big one on the back) were of him yelling during a game

if yelling at a player or an official is not "fired up", then what is your definition?

looks like Herb is about to drop the fbomb right here

NC State has the money and to some degree, the history, to compete at a higher level than we have been.

I liked the guy, but Herb's system just wasn't right for us

did you really expect hodge to say something bad about him?

And to a certain degree I do agree with Hodge. I hope we are more lenient on the next coach, B/C HE IS WINNING GAMES AND CHAMPIONSHIPS. IF NOT, GET RID OF HIM

... because of the quote i followed it up with...........

i totally agree with what monroe said there. A lot of very athletic (and talented) players wouldn't and didn't want to play under Herb's offensive scheme.

perpetual half court offense jusn't isn't effective enough in the game today. (at least in my opinion)

i think that 2 good points were made in the article

1. that herb WAS what state needed when he came (for heaven sakes he got us to the point where we have a chance to get those big name coaches)

2. that however good he was herb was never going to get the big time ppl we needed to win championships

Herb was a stepping stone (and a very effective one) to get us back into the swing.
He knew it and thats why he left us because he KNEW his system would never achieve the ultimate victory.

You cant go from ashy to classy without a middle man.
Thanks, Herb. I will root for ASU while you are there.

<Rick Barnes will take us to the next level.>

When Barnes arrives in all of his glory, then former players like Hodge/Monroe will praise the move and we can get back to focusing on hating Duke and UNC instead of each other....

This is clearly the best point.

You take better athletes, get them to play together, system independent

versus

lesser athletes, playing together, system independent

and the majority of the time the better athletes will come out on top.

This was my beef with Sendeck all along. After his first 5 years it was like he was saying "Well, I can't get the best recruits, so I'll go with a system that will maximize what I can get"

which is fine, but I think we reached the peak capable with our system and I don't think we could ever get the caliber of guys (ie, the top athletes) with Herb as coach or with this system for the exact reasons Monroe said.
