are they pretty decent? Dell makes computers, not TVs, but my dad just bought a 42" one, and I feel worrisome since...well, it's not a Sony or something. You know, people who make TVs.

Anyone have one/can share about it?

I havent kept up with them a lot...but I know theyve gotten pretty decent reviews. And I'm sure they dont actually make the tv. They just put their name on it, however Im not sure who actually does. Someone else may be able to answer that.

I can assure you 100% the panel is made by the same supplier that makes the panels for some other "name brand" manufacturer, be it Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc.

Dell doesn't really "make" anything.

You shouldn't feel worried, because in reality you have no clue who actually makes tv's.

Give her a break.

In reality Natalie, even "Sony" and "Panasonic" plasma screens don't really have "Sony" and "Panasonic" panels in them. Low-cost and high volume panel producers (typically in China, Taiwan, etc.) make the plasma panels and sell them to "name-brand" manufacturers to use in their products. Thus, it's entirely possible to get a LG plasma panel w/ a "Pioneer" or "Westinghouse" label on it, for example.

I've stopped trusting name brand and starting looking up reviews online before I'll purchase something. I can buy a product one year and look to upgrade a couple years down the road and find the new product (for whatever reason) is much lower quality than what I originally bought. Opposite situation can occur as well, where a company improves their products with time.

As has been pointed out, the manfacturing really makes the difference. Dell makes computers ... but if you talk to anybody who does IT, they'll cry over the number of systems that've had to have repaired/parts replaced due to poor manufacturing.
