okay so my friend and i parked at UW in the visitor spots and there were no towing signs around. we went in for like 30 min to get a friend, came back out and the car had been towed. we finally managed to find the car after driving around for an hour downtown to some sketchy lot. for anyone who has been towed at UW before, is there any way to get out of paying for this since we were in visitor parking? or know where we should go to talk to someone about this...thanks 4/9/2006 1:21:49 AM |

you really got towed out of visitor spots? did they say visitor spots? or were they just spots that are far away from the buildings

well, we sure thought it was visitor parking since there was a sign that said so
the one man towing operation said there were towing signs posted where we were parked, but we had to call someone just to find out the towing company number cause we couldn't find a sign anywhere 4/9/2006 1:36:38 AM |

Even though the signs may say Visitor Lot, the individual parking spaces have to have a "Yellow V" painted on them. Chances are, if you managed to find a space last night, you were not in a visitor space. There are resident spaces directly next to the visitor spaces, so you have to be careful which one you choose. It's worth a call to the Preiss Company, if you know you were parked correctly, but their policy is pretty much, "we're not responsible for anything that happens in the parking lots." 4/9/2006 12:16:10 PM |

Honestly they may have. A company attempted to tow my car out of my own apartment complex. You didn't even need a sticker or anything to park there! The only time they could tow you is if your vehicle wasn't street legal (Expired Plates/inspection/etc) or if it was not operational. I had just purchased a 2004 SRT-4 that was definitely fucking street legal and running. Apparently they realized about halfway through that I lived there, so they fucking dropped my shit in the center of the parking lot and left. I found it there the next morning, called the cops and even then the tow company told the cops that they didn't attempt to tow it. The thing is there were obvous marks in front of my car from where the dolly (I'm not sure how you spell that) had been dragging on the ground.
You are probably fucked though, unless you manage to find a technicality like MaximaDrvr did. He was towed from a different lot in raleigh, but it may have been the same company. I think he was able to prove that the sign in the parking lot was not up to legal size specifications and thus proved that his vehicle had been towed illegally.

About damned fucking time they towed you idiots taking my fucking spot!!!!
No but seriously, they never tow the people actually in violation (AKA the fuckers that park directly in front of buildings) they always tow the poor soul parked one spot over from the "V" spot, and that is bullshit.
Oh and you'll never get your money back. Sorry. It sucks but that's just the way it is.

if you had a sticker you should have reported it stolen and you'd get your car back w/o paying. 4/9/2006 4:05:36 PM |

haha I was out there one time when I lived at U Woods and we were watching the tow truck guy and he started to tow a guy in a resident spot, got it half way out then put it back, took a digital picture of it there, and then proceeded to tow it again. Sure enough they left with the car. I just though it was interesting. If they really wanted to, they could tow people from the visitors lot to a esident spot, take a pic of it there, and take it anyway. That would suck and I totally hope that they would never do it. 4/10/2006 1:39:42 PM |

They will do everything they can to take your car. Very few people will make money like I did. As soon as they found out I was sueing them, they ran scared, and begged to settle out of court. The police will not do anything for you, if you were towed legally, but if towed illegally call the police immediately and report the car stolen. They may tell you that the tow company towed it, as required by law, but inform them you were parked legally and now your car is missing.
If people have questions about towing, and/ or have problems with Medlin, let me know. 4/10/2006 4:08:18 PM |
