Quote :
"N.C. State University would love to see its football team crush opponents this fall. But for those who tailgate before the game, the university is planning another message: Play nice.

School officials are in the process of tweaking tailgate rules for the fall with a likely ban on kegs of beer, a requirement that those who drink carry a photo ID, and the possibility of pat-downs for those entering Carter-Finley Stadium.

The ban on kegs is largely symbolic, given that few people lug them to parties. But it is consistent with the message the university wants to impress upon people who party in the parking lots before each game.

"All we are really trying to say to people is, have fun and behave," said Tom Stafford, vice chancellor for student affairs, who has helped shape the changes.

NCSU cracked down on tailgate parties in 2004 after a shooting left two fans dead in the State Fairgrounds parking lot across from the stadium. After that game, only fans with game tickets could tailgate, and the parking lots were not opened until several hours before kickoff.

The same basic rules are expected to remain in place, as well as several others, including an effort to turn down music that is so loud it's a nuisance.

"I would love to see them do that," said Jennifer Wadford, a 1995 graduate who is a regular among the tailgate crowd along with her husband, Trent, and occasionally her two young children. "I want to listen to my music, not the music two cars down that somebody's teenager has decided to blast from their speakers."

Like others, Wadford said she generally agrees with the changes and the message the university hopes to send.

"Let's face it, we have a reputation now. Anything that presents a more wholesome scene is probably a good thing," she said.

Stafford said the changes did not come about directly because of the 2004 shooting, in which alcohol played a major role. But the shootings left everyone more sensitive to the role alcohol plays in tailgating and the need to enforce existing rules.

"It was such a terrible thing that you can't help but think about it whenever someone talks about tailgating," said John Stephenson, a 1992 graduate who figures he has attended gatherings before games for almost 25 years.

A university committee came up with a long list of possible changes before narrowing it down to eight items.

The longer list included prohibiting fans from leaving the stadium at halftime to return to their cars. The practice -- known as pass-outs -- isn't allowed at many universities, partly because some people drink too much during the break.

But even after the shootings, the idea of eliminating pass-outs at NCSU doesn't get a lot of support among fans.

"It's one of the things I really like about going to a game at State," Wadford said. "I wish people wouldn't abuse it."

NCSU has not made a final decision on pass-outs and might add or delete other rules now on the short list, Stafford said.

The ban on kegs, however, is almost certain. It requires the university's board of trustees to change the school's alcohol policy, a change it is expected to make at its next meeting April 28.

School administrators will then approve the final list in the coming weeks. That should give them time to distribute and publicize the rules before the season begins in September."

man that chick they quoted in there sounded like a bitch. Tailgating is a real party, not a tea party. If you want to chill with your baby and husband, do it at home and show up at kickoff

Because small children and alcohol are so integral to a "wholesome" environment.

Cut to 1994 and I GUARANTEE you that this Wadford biatch was doing body shots and pissing in the woods around C-F with her sorority sisters.

this does not really mean anything

they technically are supposed to ID in the parking lots, and pat folks down walking in, hell I had friends get caught sneaking booze into the stadium 4-5 years ago, and ID, carry that shit, you are in a public place, if you want to take the risk of underage drinking, do so at your own risk, just like you are at a bar, and kegs, no biggie....fill a trash can with busch light, same difference, there are usually only a limited number of kegs out there anyways

these are the changes that should have been made last year, instead of the communist time restrictions on when you could set up your tailgate.....hopefully with compliance they will ease back on those time restrictions in the future!

One thing that pissed me off last year was the UNC idiot on 850 The Buzz who made up the warning list of what UNC fans should avoid doing at State games.

"F-Bomb alley"

Sure enough, after this assclown's message got out, Chancellor Oblinger restricted the tailgating area to a size that could be patrolled by police more easily.

Kids are going to do that if they are drunk or not. You know that guy 4 cars away from you at the stoplight with the music blasting, he is probably there tailgating playing his music.

i dont see what the problem with music is. 95% of the time it is within the student parking area. plus the majority of the time i hear music it is a good mixture, i'm not exactly to rap or country, but most kids play a variety of good songs. so i guess what i am getting at is that if they have restrictions on music then they need to only do it for non-student parking, the students should be able to get hyped for the game however they want within reason.

If you have a good argument that can be posed against the keg restrictions, send it to the Student Body President. He can speak up about this at the BoT meeting as he is as much of a Trustee as the others (can make motions and has a vote).

Although one vote may not change anything, the students can at least go down fighting and have our voice heard.

Send him a message at sbp@ncsu.edu and let Will know to speak up and not let this issue go by without the debate it deserves. Also, BoT meetings are open to the public. Although normally those who attend are not able to speak, I don't think they'll kick you out of the room if you show up with a sign in protest.

why does the keg restriction hurt?
you can't buy in bulk anymore? have to stick to bottles...

actually, the ban on kegs does hurt, but not in the way they think, it'll probably hurt the people who have to cleanup after the tailgaters, because now they're going to have to pick up more broken bottles and jagged cans, whereas before they just had to worry about plastic cups...

I don't think they are doing pat downs and the no pass-outs thing this year. They're going to see how the other change "help" and the re-evaluate next year.
