I just got offered a position there in the Political Science Department starting in the fall. I must say I wasn't exactly impressed by the area when I visited last week.

Can anyone tell me any positives about the school/area? Is there anything to do down there?

Theres nothing there. The only pro to the area is the Lumbee river, but there's only so much kayaking and canoeing you can do before it gets old.

and it would take an act of god to get me back there. there's only so much indian culture you can take in as entertainment.

I know I shouldn't be, but i am astounded that such a shitty place can survive. Pembroke/Lumberton make Goldsboro (or Kinston, take your pick) look like a hopping, urbane metropolis (relatively speaking, duh)

Yeah, I made this thread, and then like 3 hours later I got offered a job at South Carolina. So I will most likely be going there. More pay, less teaching load, Columbia seems like it has stuff to do

Well, since NC State is no longer an option for me (you may notice my name missing from the PS course offerings for the fall), USC seems like the best choice. A little something to do there is better than squadoosh at Pembroke. Plus it's more than triple my grad stipend here, which is always nice, and the cost of living is less. I think a state school like SC looks better on the vita too.

I have a pending interview at ECU still, so we'll see what develops with that before I take the job though.

Haha, yeah, that'll probably be in my contract. Shame too, seemed like a fair share of decent looking ladies around USC's campus last week.

But I am 26 and single, so having stuff to do/places to go out to is kinda important. Particularly since I know noone at any of these places.
