I would have been cool with Barnes
I would have grown to accept Calipari even though he's Italian (and all Italians are dirty guido bastards)
but now we're talking about ESPN analysts, unproven mid-majors and coaches who are contracted until 2012....it's really getting entertaining
I LOVE how Prick Pride was saying "Cal is a lock" and "Cal is great" 2 days ago and last night were saying "who needed Cal anyways" and "he is a mediocre coach" 4/12/2006 9:00:00 AM |

Why though?
Fowler went after two 'big fish' like everyone wanted. He offered to WAY WAY overpay both of them given their accomplishments and they STILL did not want to come. How is that his fault?
I'm not amused by the search but more like shocked one of those 2 didn't come given the ridiculous amount of money we're throwing around...

I don't know which is more disappointing. Not having our Top 2 coaches come here or losing in the Sweet 16 every year with 7 Mcd'S AA's on the team..
V last I checked Elite 8>Sweet 16.. and 1 McD's AA <<< 5 McD's AA's

who is gonna be available 2 years from now that would make that worthwhile

While it has been a roller coaster ride, you guys do realize that this sort of thing is pretty commonplace.
Carolina went through every name on the list before settling on Matt Doherty. Nebraska went through like 10 coaches after getting rid of Solich. Those are just two off the top of my head.
Oh yeah, ASU was searching for a month before it "found" Herb.
We've been through two coaches on our list and around two weeks. Chill. 4/12/2006 9:57:31 AM |

Interim coach is the worst idea I have ever heard.
It might work in the NBA, where they don't have to recruit, but if you were a high school kid would you go to a school KNOWING the coach that rectuited them won't be there. 4/12/2006 10:35:26 AM |

On ESPNs Page2 today
Quote : | "I'm kind of impressed with John Calipari's loyalty to his Memphis assistants, which is reportedly the reason he turned down a sweet offer to jump to NC State, despite ... well, let's review:
• Better conference • Better program "brand" • Much more money
The fact is: Calipari will never have a better situation at Memphis than this past season -- Top 5 team, conference champ, NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed. Yet he was still marginalized as managing a second-tier program.
(Curious why NC State got hung up on compensating Cal's assistants. When you're making a multimillion dollar play for a big-name coach, isn't the rest just details?)" |

I'm just saying that we're still far away from being on the same level of those two coach finding "disasters" and that we're not nearly the laughing stock of the ACC and nation that some of you may think.
Sure, it's been a wild emotional ride for us but for most people, all they see if a few headlines that amount to Herb leaving us and two great coaches in great situations turning us down.
I sure wouldn't call it futility or a disaster quite yet. 4/12/2006 10:59:14 AM |

i'm really starting to think that we'll have to settle for Haith
and THAT would be a downgrade from Herb 4/13/2006 9:25:15 AM |
ncWOLFsu Gottfather FTL 12586 Posts user info edit post |
i used to think that was true, but haith has potential. if he can recruit like everyone seems to think he can. he had a good situation at texas, so his true ability is yet to surface. i'm not saying he's not good though.
that said, i'd still rather have gillispie or marshall over haith
--the more i think about it though, the more i like haith as well. he's already been in the acc for 2 years, and miami sucked before he got there. he isn't afraid of a challenge, and he's already beaten roy more than herb has. the only thing that concerns me is is willingness to jump ship from miami so soon. hopefully there's reasons for him to be unhappy there or something, otherwise i'd be worried about him doing the same thing here.
i'm warming up to haith

I thought the whole point of running my man out of Raleigh was to get an A-list coach
there's gotta be somebody else before we get into a bidding war with A&M or settle for a tiny conference coach or hire a lifetime assistant whose teams are led by volleyball players 4/13/2006 9:33:49 AM |
