If I launch my browser it goes to my default homepage: http://www.goodsearch.com

I can search for anything and click on it and it goes right to it, but I can't type the address in the address bar and have it connect... it just searches and searches but doesn't come up with an error page or anything.

Any suggestions?

I already have ad-aware... and I was hoping that I just wouldn't have any IE problems b/c I didn't want to download mozilla onto my new computer (trying to minimized the amount of stuff I install)

for real, even though you don't want to do it, firefox is 100 times better than IE. I've never really had issues with it. And i was skeptical as hell like 6 months ago before i installed it.

Try deleting your cookies and temp files. Also, reset all your security settings back to default.

IE: Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete Cookies -> Delete Files (put a check in the box once you click) -> Change to the Security Tab (General, Security, Privacy, Content, ....) -> Click on each icon (internet, local internet, trusted sites, and restricted sites) and click "Default Level" for each.

Then, try again. IF that doesn't work, update your virus definitons and your adaware definitions, reboot in safe mode (press F8 while computer begins to boot) and run both virus and adaware scans.

***Remember to turn off System Restore before running the scans in Safe Mode
To turn off System Restore: Right-click on 'My Computer' -> Properties -> choose 'System Restore' tab -> put a check in the checkbox, hit OK, then apply. It might take a minute but the hour glass will go away when it's done. Then close the Properties window.

But, even if you get IE working again....

So the problem seemed to have just gone away this morning... but it's hit or miss this afternoon... leading me to think it may be a problem with my connection?

After an hour on the phone with the guy from Road Runner... the source of the problem was a oddly-corrupted TCP/IP protocol that needed to be re-installed

go figure
