plot question: did "Tommy's" character rob the pawn shop at the beginning of the film?

i had just assumed he had brought the money and the wedding ring chain from his home planet along with the convincing wardrobe, the human disguise, etc.

Here's some advice my film professor told us when we watched this: don't get too caught up in the details, you'll just confuse yourself even more.

^^^ If you read the book, Tommy pawns one of the many rings for the money. I was disappointed that they did not show that part of the book in the film. It was the alien's first contact.
