Hi, All I am a graduate student in NC state. I want to transfer to another university in the fall semester. However, my professor asked me to stay here for another semester and didn't let me go. How can I leave? Your suggestions are really appreciated. 4/17/2006 7:21:15 PM |

1) Apply to a graduate program at a university that isn't NCSU.
2) Don't pay your fall 2006 tuition to NCSU.
3) Don't use the professor you're dumping as a reference. 4/17/2006 7:28:05 PM |

uhm, have you folks ever been in graduate school, perhaps his program isn't that easy
sometimes you sign letters of commitment depending on assistantships or scholarships
and we don't even know why he wants to leave
also, most grad schools have just passed the april 15th date, which i'm pretty sure is a gold standard for the latest they go without finalizing their entries
i could be wrong about everything of course

As a grad student, it's pointless to try to transfer. You just apply to another school & start over.
I know several people who have done this, without any problems.
It's not going to get you anywhere entering as a transfer student. Any courses/research done here isn't going to do you anygood elsewhere. 4/17/2006 8:10:03 PM |

you don't want NCSU to be on your graduate diploma, G. go to PACE, DUKE, YALE, USC, UNC, UCLA, NYU or something . . . NCSU is fine for undergrad and pretty inexpensive. 4/17/2006 8:18:20 PM |

what i love about this is that this person obviously had >3.0 and that meant to the university that he had it all figured out...yet i, with a 2.81 (in engineering, mind you), and can tie my own shoes, can not get in 4/17/2006 9:56:47 PM |

If you're a US citizen and paying your own tuition, you can leave at any time. Getting into another school for the Fall may be tough if you missed deadlines.
If you signed something in exchange for a tuition waiver or a fellowship or such, then you need to read the paperwork to find out your legal and financial obligations.

If you apply to another NC system school, you have to provide transcripts of all coursework attempted at each school you attend. Im pretty sure they know which schools you have been enrolled before. 4/17/2006 10:11:52 PM |

Thank you for all your replies. My situation is a little complex. I am an international student and get the research assistantship. Since the RA contract ends in May, I think I am free to leave after I wrap up what I am doing here and let other person to start easily from there. But my professor insists that I don't finish the project and request me to stay here. I don't think I have the obligation to finish all the stuff. Can I go to some places to complain about that? 4/17/2006 11:12:32 PM |

If you have no obligation here, you can try to get a position somewhere else. I'm not sure what you plan to complain about.

Yeah lets just find that $100,000 we all have laying around somewhere...
Not everyone wants to do something that requires them to go to an Ivy leauge grad school, saying that graduate programs from NCSU are worthless is idiotic.4/18/2006 4:53:49 AM |

dooyee: You do have some freedom to switch grad schools since your RA contract is up. BUT, did you ever promise your advisor that you would be finishing your thesis/research project under him? Professors typically renew RA-ships once a year, but that doesn't mean they are ok with you leaving them whenever you please since they invested time in guiding you through independent studies, research, etc.
With that said, it is always easier to trasfer to another grad school if there is some kind of collaboration between the said school and your research group, that way your Advisor will be happier to let you go. Technically speaking as long as there is no breach of contract from your side, you should be good to go and no-one can hold you down, but it's just not very common. Plus with you being an international student, there are other implications with regard to documents that need to be furnished, application deadlines to be met, etc etc

My problem depends on how to define the obligation. Actually, I have talked with the department head. He indicated that I have the obligation to finish the project here even if my RA expires. And whether the project is finished is defined by my professor. As a student, I don't know how to reject it. 4/18/2006 10:49:18 AM |
Sizzle Veteran 217 Posts user info edit post |
So how much time have you spent under this prof? Has he paid your out-of-state tuition...and for how many semesters? And how many research credits do you have under him?
Talk to one of the advisors in the International Office. Since they don't have any selfish interest in you producing a thesis for them, they should give you unbiased guidance on this situation (or atleast you can hope so).

One of my history professors, Dunstan, said he transfered grad schools half way through (as opposed to starting over somewhere else I believe). I'm sure you could look up his contact information on the history department if you were so inclined.
So far you seem to want to leave just because you aren't required to stay. But considering you've vested time and effort here, and people here have put time & effort into you, it seems like there would be more reason for wanting to give all those connections up. 4/18/2006 1:08:14 PM |
