I read that Cruise's actual last name is Mapother. Hence picking the Hebrew first name, I guess.

You do realize that Mapother isn't a (common) Jewish last name, correct? He was originally Catholic before he went nutso with Scientology.

Not that Catholics/Christians don't give their children Hebrew names, I may just be reading into your statement a bit too much.
