a long time ago...the only thing i could think of is if they played a long game, ran out of people to hit from subs and whatnot...unless he was a good bunter

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Abbott

Quote :
"He did bat for himself during spring training games and interleague games when in a National League ballpark. When Abbott joined the National League's Brewers in 1999 he went to bat 21 times, collecting two hits. When batting, Abbott would swing the bat one-handed but would usually bunt."

^^ Interleague regular season play started in 1997 so he had the chance of an at-bat in '98 with the white sox and of course in 99 with Milwaukee (NL)... where his only official at bats are recorded.

In that picture he is playing for the Angels.

I still cannot see how he was batting.

They never made the World Series in the 1990s.

According to The Baseball Encyclopedia, he never had a regular-season at-bat before he played for Milwaukee. Angels didn't play in any World Series around that time (looks like a 1991 Upper Deck). And I don't think he made any all-star teams. So it's gotta be from spring training.

If you lay down a good sacrafice bunt, I'm pretty sure it doesn't count as an at-bat, just a plate appearance.

I thought there was a way to lose the DH in the AL durring a game, anyway (i.e. moving the DH into a defensive position forcing the pitcher to hit in the subbed player's spot on the lineup). But then again, I could just be high.

This thread is not complete without pictures of Julian Tavarez, Carlos Zambrano, and David Ortiz.

Sorry I'm at work so I cannot get to sports sites to find pictures.
