So its a Friday night and I just finished watching "In the Company of Men." (Yea, I know. Pathetic). I haven't seen it in around 7 years and it just reminded me how painful it is to watch. And I'm not talking "Oh god, Pearl Harbor is a horrid, shitty movie. Its so painful to watch." I'm talking about "Jeezus. If this happened in real life (and probably does), I'd vomit its so cruel and horrific." I'd like to leave out horror films and movies that are just pitiful that they're hard to watch.

My list:

In the Company of Men
Happiness
Storytelling
and to a lesser extent: Your Friends and Neighbors

Lars Von Trier's entire catalogue, for starters.

Anything dealing with addiction or certain types of mental illnesses are really hard to watch for me. Down to the Bone was a pretty strong example of that, and I just couldn't watch it all the way through. Or is kind of like that, too, but it's a shitty movie anyway. Midnight Cowboy fucking kills me.

Stuff dealing with treatment of gays and lesbians can be really hard. Boys Don't Cry, for example. You know it's coming, that it won't end well, but you watch it anyway. Other stuff dealing with persection, genocide, whatever, falls in this category as well, but is mostly not as topical. Nazis aren't running around too much these days. You still have Hotel Rwanda, Rabbit-Proof Fence, stuff like that.

I don't know if this fits the description perfectly, but Magnolia is just incredibly depressing. Another obvious choice is Requiem. Similar to Magnolia is Amores Perros, which, while not entirely depressive, has certain storylines that end terribly. The ending of that movie is horrible. I mean, it's wonderful, but it's horrible.

Sylvia was hard on me, once again because I knew what was coming. That definitely makes it worse. Suicide is hard, and the scene in The Royal Tenenbaums with Richie in front of the mirror fucking kills me. I think it's one of the most beautiful things in any movie I've ever seen, too. Of course, most of the movie isn't like that. But the air of desperation and having given up is there in a lot of other scenes, too.

More on topic would be El Crimen de Padre Amaro, which is about a priest (Gael Garcia Bernal, who kicks many asses) who impregnates a young girl. Things don't go well.

Thirteen would fit the bill were it not so hilariously shitty.

And, of course, if we can count documentaries, well, holy fuck.

^ Those sound like all good choices.

Boys Don't Cry and Requiem are both on my list to watch. I heard Requiem is an amazingly painful movie to watch. I'll look into the other films. Thanks.

I'll try and think of some more later. I threw in Midnight Cowboy to hide the fact that I've seen every goddamn movie of the last five years and like ten movies from before then.

Hahaha, no kidding. But that's why I like him, I think. I'm never complacent when watching any of his films.

It's pretty difficult to make me squeamish or something, though.

No good came from watching that movie.

Passion of the Christ was bad, bad, bad. I'm not a religious person AT ALL, and I was cringing in my seat for pretty much the entire movie. At least an hour and a half of just straight-up torture scenes.

Legends of the Fall was a raging tear-fest.

Million Dollar Baby. Great movie, and I WILL NEVER WATCH IT AGAIN. My husband and I both cried at that one.

The cat crushing video is kind of painful to watch.

I guess.

I dunno, the only movies I've ever had a problem sitting through were the ones like Hostel/Hills Have Eyes because of the intense gore and fucked up situations.

Oh and movies like "Dude, Where's my car", where it's not as painful, just too obnoxious to sit through.

To the OP: if you thought those movies were hard to watch, you shouldn't be watching Labute/Solondz movies

I personally thought all four of those were hilarious, and felt no sympathy for any character in those movies(respectively: the blind chick, Joy, Selma Blair's character/Scooby, Aaron Eckhart's character/all of em). You just have to realize that all of these "victims" were soley created for your entertainment, if you don't find the humor in their turmoil you should probably avoid the dark comedy drama.

The only movie mentioned here that made me physically cringe was irreversible.

first movie I thought of with this thread has been mentioned: House of Sand and Fog

Closer...although i didn't fully enjoy this movie for many other reasons than why i think it to be a painful movie, but it was painful to my b/c by the end of it I felt like I had been through some really nasty breakup.

and i can't think of the name of the 3rd movie that popped into my head for the life of me......
