the network has been fucked for almost a year now

and they don't give a shit, I complained to every-fucking-body about it and they kept trying to blame it on Wolf Village

after a few months of my complaints being ignored I decided that I'd just whore BitTorrent at full fucking bore with several hundred connections no upstream limit all day every day to make a point. Sustaining 1MB/sec upstream for days and weeks at a time resulted in absolutely no communication from them whatsoever. Moral of this story? They don't give a fuck what you do and they don't give a fuck what you can't do. Make a friend that lives somewhere near by and set up a high gain directional wireless link to them, that's the only way you'll get latency and UDP ploss acceptable for anything that such factors even remotely effect.

Oh, and presuming you're in WV still, the Nomad jack in the living room isn't (wasn't?) traffic shaped at all. NAT over that and your problems will be solved.

NCSU lost a few employees including several net admins. They are currently hiring like 10 net admins at the moment.

look. we know about the lag problem and have been trying to figure out what the issue is. however, there is nothing readily apparent. that's why it has taken so long.

most of the complaints we have gotten have been about gaming, and honestly, gaming is not the highest priority.

we have never blamed the network in wolf village for anything. the main problem is that there is an overall resnet bandwidth cap and you have 8000 people fighting for that bandwidth. when people do stuff like run bittorrent, they consume way more bandwidth than is "fair." however, we don't do anything to limit bandwidth on a more individual basis, so if it's available, you are just as likely to get a ton of bandwidth as anyone else is.

we have a very open network policy and do virtually no monitoring or limiting. that's why no one every came after you because of your high bandwidth utilization. so basically, you were just being an ass to your fellow ResNet users.

way to go.

wow, you are really obnoxious.

comtech is severely understaffed right now and there are a lot of other things going on that are higher priority than making sure that customers can play games.... things like customers can use the web, get email, not get hacked, etc.

as the orginazation structure goes, we at resnet only care about the customers. comtech cares about the network. i am trying my best to get comtech to fix the problem because i do care about my customers. the problem is that they can figure out what the problem is. and if we don't know what's wrong we can't exactly fix it, can we?

catalyst 1900's are the problem. put some 3500's in a building to test and I'm willing to bet most of the problems go away.

we have 3550s in about half the buildings. yes, they're in the ones where people are complaining there is lag.

reread my post carefully about customers, organizations and who cares about gaming.

ftr, pings are very low priority.... don't count your lag time by dropped or slow pings. it's not necessarily a fair comparison to reality.

unless you go somewhere where your only option is NTC media provider (for internet, cable and phone). if a fast/reliable internet connection is important to you, do NOT move there. luckily i don't watch much TV or do too much online gaming, because the connection is only fast sometimes and it drops about every half hour. seriously, open up an IM window for my name and watch me sign off and on all day as my connection is dropped and reopened.

Seriously. Ping is simply a reachability tool, and is a horrible measure of performance. Anyone who doesn't understand that has a poor fundamental understanding of networking.

when you whining bitchespeople get out into the real world, you'll realize quick that it sucks much worse for your employer's email system to go tits up than your cable modem at home die for a couple hours and prevent you from playing a couple rounds of WoW/BF2/wtfever

it comes with the territory of having being a state employee.

You could lay the boss's daughter and not get fired, but you'll be getting regular colonoscopies before you get a decent raise.

but i still need for people to answer the question... has there been a performance improvement since noon?

(if there has been, i'll let you know what problem we found and corrected.... )

to answer you question clevow: performance was somewhat better today than it has been recently, but still worse than it was before this started. At any rate the real test will be prime time friday when many more people will be on.
thanks for working on it and communicating with us here.

have any residents tried a trace route to find where the actual slowdown is?

okay, so part of the problem was that a SINGLE PERSON was consuming almost one third of the bandwidth available to ResNet. thus far we believe that this person's computer had been hacked or something. we have disabled the port and blocked the MAC address for the computer but the user has not yet contacted us to let us know what was going on.

one more reason not to do stupid things like
Quote :
"whor[ing] BitTorrent at full fucking bore with several hundred connections no upstream limit all day every day"

we're not sure the problem is totally resolved, but we seem to be heading in the right direction.

Oh, and all you WoW users, have your read the article at http://news.com.com/World+of+Warcraft+battles+server+problems/2100-1043_3-6063990.html regarding the problems they've been having with their servers and ISP?

hopefully not, because a traceroute would not give you any valid indication of where the "actual slowdown is" any more than a ping would.

ICMP is not meant to measure performance. don't do it.

the max bw available to 1 user is 100mbit i thought - doesn't resent have more than 300mbit available?

when a certain few servers used to be on campus before the fbi took them away from bragaw - they were peaking at 9mbyte/s and averaging 6mbyte/s for prolonged periods of time - all of the bw wasn't being utilized by those servers i didn't think

[Edited on April 26, 2006 at 12:07 PM. Reason : why give a kid the ability to utilize 1/3 of the total resnet bw]

i like that resnet is assuming the pc was hacked - that is rather nice

i still don't see how 1 pc was causing a general slowdown - there used to be a server with 4 100mbit NICs hooked up in winston 309d back when ryan jones used to work in there (~4yrs ago) - was the top usa mp3 server of its time

and that was just one of the servers hooked up on campus - not to count the few that were in bragaw/sully
