Seriously. I'm not sure what that means but I tried to connect cable up to my aiw card and everytime I held the cable and touched the chasis with my other hand I had a significant amount of current run through my body. Anyway i got the balls to try to connect it anyway and it froze my pc like screen capture style on my monitors and it flickered the lights for a sec.

Then my pc wouldn't boot, pulled out the aiw and it worked fine. It's not the card, because I tried it with my wintv card and the same problem, some nice healthy current running right through me. The line works fine, its currently connected to my rr cable box and i got no issues. BUT I live in a house with old wiring and i'm wondering if not having a ground on my pc is causing this problem.

It sounds like maybe your PC is grounding through the cable line. Just make sure that they wall socket your computer is plugged in to is grounded properly, make sure there aren't any strange wires hanging loose, touching your case, and stuff like that.

Yeah, that's the problem. Instead of the computer grounding through the socket, like it's suppose to, it's grounding through the cable line (or you, if you touch it and are grounded). Are you using one of those 3-2 prong adapters or something?

However, I don't know for sure (depending on how the cable line is wired up and such), but the PC grounding through it shouldn't be too bad (but, I don't know, someone else will).

First of all I'd like to note that lack of sense gets tossed out when you're under the influence and you just want the damn thing to work and when youre just damn curious to see what would happen anyway.

So yeah i'm using those 3 to 2 prong adapters all over the house for everything. According to our 70 year old electrician not having a ground should not affect any of my equipments operation.

So should I try to create my own ground and run a line from some pipes in the basement up to my room now.

is there not a ground in the outlet? if there is those adapters have a place to ground to the screw in the middle

if they dont make your landlord fix it, im pretty sure they are supposed to have grounds

you might also want to check that the cable tv cable has a grounding block on it. This is typically located outside the house where the cable enters it. The cable line could be picking up some current if it is run parallel to power lines in the house. Those cable grounding blocks are standard issue for time warner or any other company like that so if you don't have one you could bitch to then and they should come out and put one in for you.

Also, the grounding issue in the rest of you house could have something to do with it too, but this would probably be an easier fix.

floating grounds kick ass... and by kick ass I mean THEY WILL KICK YOUR ASS... I've arcwelded a couple of things while working on floated -48v telco stuff... proper grounding is essential
