Lavin formerly coached at UCLA from 1996-2003. He has spent the last three seasons in broacasting at ESPN and ABC Sports. "

expect a pay raise for lavin soon.

fowler is going to be really well-liked by coaches (and now media!) nationwide before this is done.

Really this was too high pressure of a job for Lavin to come into anyway after not having been a head coach for a couple of years now and primary recruiting time having already passed.

giving fowler the benefit of the doubt, i read earlier that beilein wanted to wait until after some sort of senior dinner thing with his team this friday. so maybe fowler wanted to do the honorable thing and let him have that event before anything was formally announced.

Any way you look at it, this makes us look bad, and that's no one's fault but Lee Fowler. The goddamn title of that article is "Lavin Spurns State".

We should never have been put into a position where we offer Lavin and he turns us down. No one goes about a coaching search this way.

It's like a monkey fucking a football around here.

Who all asked for what?

I fail to see how support or lack thereof of Sendek correlates in any way with the patheticness of this coaching search.

If you look at it that it does, but Beilein is not a Herb Sendek. He is regaurded at an X&O coach who can make in-game decisions, one of the main detractors about Herb. I would have no problem seeing him here, since there wouldn't need to be a change in system that would take a couple of seasons to work fluidly anyway and we can continue to attract the same and now better recruits we were getting with Herb.

That link doesnt mention that Lavin was even offered the job, just that he talked to Fowler extensively. In fact, The Sporting News is the only place I recall mentioning he was ever offered. Bur whatever, doesnt matter, I agree Beilein is the guy we need, and if he comes in and gets this team going without falling off too much or at all (which I believe is possible) then no one is going to remember how many guys we went through before we hired him.

in the case of barnes, i dont see how he went "yeah, im not going to ncsu because they have bad fans who drive the coaches out of town." i dont think that played as big of a role in finding a new coach as some of you think.

Nor would I, nor would I. However, a few of Herbs biggest detractors pointed to the offense as the biggest reason they wanted him gone. Not to single a person out but I know PackBacker was one of them... Not saying I disagree totally but that was a big reason. I'd be interested to hear his take on this..

Let's put it this way, name one program that consistantly went to the NCAA's within a 5 year span, ended the season with over 20 wins, put well known pressure on the coach throughout the season only for that coach to leave when it was all said and done. With the seat empty it is hot for all the wrong reasons.

Whatever. The fans have nothing to do with how this search was conducted, which is in large part why we look bad.

Fowler's reported shotgun method of inquiring apparently turned many people off and was generally criticized nationwide.

Getting publicly turned down by Barnes and Calipari are one thing, but getting turned down nationally by Lavin is unacceptable.

^ and to answer your question: similar things have been done in many sports and by many programs in basketball.

ncWOLFsu not everyone believe we have beilein wrapped up. I know you might think you have sources or something, but when you only have two real candidates for a job and one turns you down, it's a pretty good time to not chill out.

I don't like the offense... but that's not the sole reason I didn't think Herb was our man.

There was much more to it for me.

Belein doesn't get me super-excited but he's a proven coach who has accomplished quite a bit in a short amount of time. If that's the worst we can do, I'm okay with it. He's proven he can win (reasonably) big in a very good conference with less talent than we have here.

Belein's offense is also a little more uptempo than Herb's. (Albeit, not much)

If he wins and at least is competitive vs. superior teams, I'll be happy. I think he will be, personally.

Tell me, how else should we be approaching the search? Everyone know its open, so I doubt the sit back and let the candidates come to you would work for this fanbase in a timely manner. I Fowler had not gone after Barnes, fans would have called for his head. In fact, I remember the reports that Fowler was not returning inquires from Calipari when he was still in pursuit of Barnes and people on this very website was critizing him for that.

It is obvious that nothing Fowler could have done would have appeased everyone.

i don't have sources. i just look further than tww when i want to know something.

i'll be very surprised if it's not beilein at this point.

the rumors (yes, rumors) are that we will pay him ~$1.3mil/year and of that he will pay $500k to WVU each year for 3 years, covering half of his $3mil buyout. we pay the other half.

if those RUMORS are true, then he obviously wants to come here.

Also, FWIW, 2 more things from me:

1) I wonder if Lavin "turned us down" becuase he didn't want it, "turned us down" becuase we couldn't guarantee the amount of money he wanted, or "turned us down" becuase we decided on Belein.

My guess is #2. He probably wanted close to 1.5-2 mil guaranteed for 5 years or something. That's a lot of money for an "unproven" coach to have guaranteed for him.... if this is the case, good job Lee Fowler. (I'm not spinning or downplaying, just guessing. I know the problem early on with Lavin supposedly being offered was guaranteed money in his contract vs. the UNC max guarantee of $250k per year. His ESPN contract guaranteed him millions per year).

Like everyone said, this still looks bad on NC State that we got "turned down" by an announcer....

2) I believe Belein is our next coach. (obviously)

^ I agree with you, I see alot of people getting upset for Lavin turning down the job, without even know what reason or factors were involved with his decision, it if was solely his in the first place.

I would love to read a diary on Lee Fowler's days during this coaching search. One thing that I was reminded of one day while listeing to VCU's AD, prior to Capel leaving for Oklahoma, was that coaching searches are one of the few high profile jobs that are expected to be filled in the shortest amount of time. Chancellors, teachers even AD's in most cases can take months to fill the position just because of the time involved to research the best possible candidate. When it comes to coaches though you are not alllowed that type of time and you therefore have to scramble to get the best possible fit.

Who gives a fuck what the nation thinks about us at this point.

Fucking hire a god damn coach. I dont care if its bozo the fucking clown. Nobody respects us in the first place. Nobody bothers to print the real information, they just spin it so that NC State looks shittier compared to whoever we are up against...in this case...Lavin.

I mean damn....if you people havent figured out by now that we get no respect and we probably wont ever again...then you're dumb. Half the reason I pull so hard for State is to shove it in the opponents face when our supposid lousy team and lousy fans and lousy school beats the fuck out of them.

Other media agree with me that it should have been handled better already.

First off, when your coach quits you don't call every coach in the nation to and try to guage interest in our job. Supposedly Fowler did this and contacted some very strange people and some very inappropriate people, and it started the search off on a bad note.

Secondly, Getting turned down by Cal and Barnes, I don't blame Fowler for that. But getting publicly "turned down" by Lavin is completely Fowlers fault. Most media agree that unless you are going after a really bigname coach you don't offer them the job unless you already know the answer. It's reported that we offered him, and now for whatever reason he's "spurned" us, and that makes it look bad.

It's all PR...bad bad PR by Fowler and his staff.

My point was the the way the search is being conducted has nothing to do with the fans and the blame rests solely on Fowler.

And so far I really don't think any of serious candidates have turned us down because of our fans, but that's my opinion. Barnes just had a better deal in Texas....Calipari took the easy road in Memphis, and Lavin's case....well who knows. Probably money was the issue. But who really knows. The least likely explanation is our fanbase I believe.

I don't think Lavin turned us down either. I think we might have went after him and Beilein at the same time...there were problems with getting Lavin and contracts...then we decided we wanted Beilein a little bit more and could get through his buyout.

I think we'll look better for getting Beilein than Lavin...and even if we look bad for Lavin "turning us down"...getting Beilein will overshadow that. Beilein has a pretty good reputation nationally.

Would you really want a coach that turns down $2 million a year because of a bunch of fans on the internet that may not like you?

God forbid they have to play somewhere where someone boos, like Cameron or the Smith Center.
