Do you think this deserves jail time though?
Sure it sucks and she was possibly being irresponsible... but... why does JAIL have to punish everything?
Thoughts? 4/28/2006 1:04:18 PM |

to me, this is kinda like the principle behind DUI. Intoxication is not necessarily a crime, but when your intoxication causes harm to someone else (passing out on your nursing baby), then you should be held accountable for it. 4/28/2006 1:08:28 PM |

I wish they had some background info on the lady so we could pass better judgement
Like, if she was a 19 year old white trash high school dropout who didnt know who the babies daddy was and drank all the time and had a crinimal background, then jail her for life
But it sorta sounds from this article that she's a respectable older woman who had a few beers, wanted to tend to her baby, dozed off while nursing and just had horrible luck. 4/28/2006 1:34:51 PM |

I don't feel like paying taxes to keep her in prison. She needs substance abuse counseling or something. She trauma she is experiencing for killing her own child is most likely punishment enough. 4/28/2006 1:50:44 PM |

it's ok to drink while nursing...it actually helps the baby go to sleep if they are cranky/crying. same line as putting rum in a baby's milk when they're teething4/28/2006 2:10:35 PM |

uhhh yep...ask your mom if she ever drank a glass of wine or two (if she breastfed you) so that you would go to sleep. or if when you were teething she put rum or some other alcohol on your gums or in your milk to ease the pain...it's an old home remedy that doctors would (i dunno about STILL so imma take that out) recommend.
you don't get your kid loaded or anything...but apparently the little bit of alcohol that does pass through the mother's milk is fine.
i'm not gonna say TODAY it's "fine" but i wouldn't be surprised if this woman, like me, has heard this same old home remedy and thought she'd be okay and then unfortunately fell asleep on top of the baby

and before you all go attacking my character...i don't have any kids and don't plan to have any kids anytime soon...but believe me if i was i would make sure from my doctor it was okay before i did any of my own home remedies. this is just what i've heard and i know my mom did once or twice when my brother was a baby (maybe that's what's wrong with him ) but they usually drove him around in the car to put him to sleep. apparently i was not as fussy and liked to sleep a lot.

According to the link, she was getting drunk while bowling. I somehow doubt she was thinking "hey, this will help my baby sleep better" or "I wonder how much of this alcohol will be transferred to the breast mill?" She was probably some dumb redneck or ghetto trash that was too stupid or irresponsible to have any kids. If the baby didn't die from being suffocated now, it probably would have ended up dead or in prison later in life.4/28/2006 2:27:15 PM |

being a mother to an infant seems like a really time & energy consuming job... is she not supposed to have any drinks or social activities for the entire time the child is feeding off her? I dont care how drunk you are, you don't fall asleep with a child hanging off your "breast"! Definitely foul play! And you don't drink while breast feeding anyways!! Ask any doctor-or someone who has had a child- and they will tell you that drinking while nursing your child is a HUGE NO-NO!! If your kid is cranky or crying you give them TYLENOL or Benedryl--not ALCOHOL! They can have a social life, but drinking should not be involved. If drinking is your only option in your social life after you have a child--well, that's just sad. (I've had 2 friends and an Aunt have babies recently, so I do know what I'm talking about. I asked one's doctor myself.)

I can speak as a mother on this one...I have a son who I breastfed for 2 months...I couldn't continue breastfeeding because, without going into detail, my milk dried up.
Quote : | "People said the child was suffocated... how? Did it just not take breathing breaks or use its nose while nursing? " |
Well, when you are nursing a baby, you generally don't lay on top of it. I'm sure she probably had the baby to her side or something. She probably either leaned over on it while sitting up and squished its face into her where it couldn't breathe, or she was laying down nursing and rolled over on it.
Also, drinking while breastfeeding is a very very bad idea. I just don't see how any caring mother, in their right mind, could drink while breastfeeding. I understand, sort of, why mothers "back in the day" did it. I guess research proving the effects of alcohol on a fetus/newborn hadn't been conduted as thoroughly as it has been today. I mean, think about it. Drinking while breastfeeding is generally the same as drinking while pregnant. Yes, your child has physically developed after it is born, but its brain is still developing at a high rate. If your baby has fetal alcohol syndrome when born, it will look different (cleft lip, etc), not to mention the internal effects. However, drinking while you are breastfeeding can have detramental effects to your newborn's brain. It may not even be able to be detected until later in life. Depending on the concentration of alcohol you drink, you can cause your child to have anything from learning disabilities to mental retardation. Think people.4/28/2006 3:50:47 PM |

Just an FYI: I'm not personally attacking you. I'm sure your parents raised you to the best of their ability and your mom didn't go out and get trashed every night and then breastfeed you. I'm generally speaking more about these alcoholic moms who go out, get drunk, then come home to a hungry baby and breastfeed. In situations like that, people should just use formula, not to mention they really shouldn't have children. Your parents probably raised you before they did all of the alcohol vs fetal/newborn development research conducted within the past 10-15 years. I was just giving my opinion...no harm intended toward you or the way you were raised.

nicotine is a drug...alcohol is a drug...same principal, just different (bad) effects and a different drug. Moms who smoke while pregnant generally give birth to underweight babies with a high chance of birth defects. Breastfeeding while smoking still gives your child nicotine. It could lead to some developmental disabilities as well as addicting your child to nicotine. When you quit breastfeeding, you will possibly have a very very cranky baby that will go through something similar to what a mild crack baby would experience (of course nicotine isn't as "bad" as crack, but it's definitely not healthy). It will be addicted to nicotine and have to go through withdrawals. 4/28/2006 4:06:31 PM |

alright, so you make a statement about child care and then disqualify it by saying you don't have kids, don't plan to have one anytime soon, etc....why not just edit your initial post or have another post saying, "i made a potentially ignorant/stupid comment earlier, and i fucked up." also, i don't think people (myself included) are attacking your character...more disagreeing with and/or flaming your opinions on child care...4/28/2006 4:51:54 PM |
