Since the "Wii" has been unveiled, I've decided to take a look at other retarded console names. Wii is pretty damn hard to beat, though, but i'll still get one.

Gamecube was at one point called Starcube. Before that it was the Dolphin, wtf?

Xbox is a retarded name, but not as retarded as Xbox 360. Xbox is stupid enough, what does the 360 serve?

PlayStation was a modest name, but Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 make me chuckle.

Nintendo 64 is almost as retarded as it gets, except for it's previous name, the Nintendo Ultra 64.

Nintendo Entertainment System advancing to SUPER nintendo entertainment system, that's great.

The originality of the Game Boy systems never cease to give me a smile. What the fuck does DS stand for?

All of Nintendo's systems have retarded names, their worst probably "Virtual Boy". Hahahahaha.

Sega always had cool names. Genesis, Nomad, Saturn, Dreamcast. Now they're dead. Go figure.

Honorable mentions: WonderSwan, Jaguar, Lynx (whats up with Atari's fascination with cats?)

It does seem stupid but it does fit a particular profile:

- The Wii (pronounced "We") is designed around multiplayer participation. (We ... get it?)
- The "Wii" has two "ii"s, the "i" being for individual ... two being multiple "i"ndividuals.
- If you looked up the "Nintendo We" on Google you would never find it because every page that had "Nintendo" and "we" in it would show up.
- "Wii" requires no abbreviation.
- The name is the logo, likewise it is universally used in multiple languages without the need for translation.

It actually makes sense when you think about it.

It is extremely common for companies to have codenames for projects prior to their rollout. Most projects never make it to production so it is incredibly pointless for a company to call a project by an expected "final" name because it causes marketing confusion. Usually projects are killed, merged, modified, revamped, etc before it even gets to a test market after which point they begin the naming process and marketing.

Yes, 2 follows 1, 3 follows 2. It is very easy marketing designation. The truth is that using numbers makes items easier to sell. 3 is a higher number than 2 so it must be better! (It seems dumb but yes, it works.)

It is part of our language and people know the name "Super Nintendo" as well as they know the above examples.

I dont like it, but it's not my fucking company. I think we should all know by now that nintendo markets towards kids in general. I mean, the gamecube looked like a lunchbox for christ sakes. The last time I was still in their target age group I was playing super nintendo.

Nintendo has a history of being very Japanese centric. That's why they stuck a damn handle on the GC and made it purple.
