if you had been running it and it all of a sudden stopped working, go outside and see if the compressor is covered with a shitload of ice. if so, you system is low on coolant

cut the a/c on. go outside and see if the unit is even running. if not, then check the breaker. report back here when complete.

odds are it's a low coolant or a compressor fan motor gone bad.. our apartment's unit had both problems.

if you run your A/C constantly (thermostat set low, etc.) then the frozen compressor is the likely problem.

You're either low on refrigerant or your compressor is shot. One is cheap to fix, one isn't. Either way, call your local HVAC service technician.

okay. after getting more info. it's the fan inside the powers on and spins, but the green a/c box outside does not come on.

how much is this going to cost me?

Open the power panel on the AC unit itself - you should see a big metal can (cylinder or flask) - if the top is blown up/bloated out or grease everywhere, you just need to replace the cold/hard-start cap

if you're coolant isn't low, my bet is on that being the problem. You can replace it yourself - its easy as pie - only costs $20

or pay $90 for someone else to do it

^ That's expensive for HVAC service work. $60/hr is what my father's company charges.

^^^ It's going to cost way more than $20 dollars to charge an AC unit unless you already have the tools and the license needed to buy R-22. God help you if it's an old R-12 unit.

I didn't say recharge, i said replace the capacitor

in fact, I went out of my way to exclude recharging from my cost estimate. beginning my statement with, "if the coolant isn't low"

guy came out and said it was an issue with the "furnace control board" not giving a signal or something. $95/for the service call and $270 for the equipment with about another hour for the work. so look like the total cost is about $500 . . .

does this seem right or are the charges going to be more ??????????????????

Kinda funny how these newer systems are. The part is officially called the logic board, and you can actually troubleshoot it much like you would a car's computer system...you can pull error codes and everything.

It doesn't suprise me that the board is expensive. As far as labor goes...aren't you in Florida? I'd LOVE to be an HVAC technician down there. I'd fucking clean house.

The HVAC folks down there got everybody by the short-n-curlies.

those boards go out frequently.

tell him to replace your cold-start while he's at it (if he's not already)
