An unnamed source inside the Chancellor’s office is begining to speak of Oblinger's discontent with Lee Fowler’s failure to find a new coach by now. Look for him to be fired in the next two weeks.

How the hell is it Fowlers fault?

You fans were the ones that screamed at him to go after big time coaches, and he did, and they turned us down AS THEY WERE EXPECTED TO BY MOST RATIONAL PEOPLE. I mean, theyre in better situations. The environment here sucks right now.

Fowler did all he could.

^^You're an idiot.

Fowler could not close the deal with any of the multitude of coaches who were interested and met with him personally. Maybe 1 or 2 of them used him for a raise, but if thats the case what does that say for his intelligence that he would allow that to happen?

He obviously knows nothing about negotiating, which is evidenced by him throwing out ridiculous offers for coaches to bring back to their current employers. Everybody in the biz (except Lee Fowler) knows that if a coach is gonna fly out to Raleigh to check out the facilities, you don't leave offers on the table. You give him a take-it-or-leave-it deal so that he can't fuck us in the ass the way Barnes, Calipari, Lavin, etc did. And I'm not even gonna get into how badly he screwed up the Beilein situation, although I'm glad he did.

^Actually, the Beilein situation showed a lack of integrity on Fowler's part, and will hinder our ability to go after other coaches.

Wolfpack falling behind UNC in nearly everything

By W. Curt Vincent - The Press Box
The 2005-2006 school year may very well go down as the most frustrating in N.C. State sports history. In fact, the Wolfpack yearbook staff might as well save a page at the front of its sports section for a cover sheet titled “We Just Couldn't Beat the Tar Heels ... In Anything.”

Forget that those wearing red opened the school year seeing that very same color over the fact that the North Carolina men's basketball team was the reigning NCAA champions. Wolfpack fans were surely thinking this would be their year when it came to the hoops rivalry with the Tar Heels, simply because the champs had lost its top seven scorers.

But like the rest of the sporting world, Wolfpack fans were oh-so-wrong. Thanks to Roy Williams, who was tabbed the ACC and National Coach of the Year, and Tyler Hansbrough, who was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, the Tar Heels not only spanked N.C. State on the hardcourt, but also probably managed - along with Mike Krzyzewski and Duke over in Durham - to ruin any chance of the Wolfpack landing a top-notch coach to replace the now-departed Herb Sendek.

And while I'm still on basketball, Lumberton's own Billie McDowell and her Lady Wolfpack team also took a back seat to Ivory Latta and the Lady Tar Heels.

But before basketball practice even started, there was football - where N.C. State coach Chuck Amato sported his crazy sunglasses and footwear. He also led a talented boatload of football players who made up a lousy team.

And when the Wolfpack met North Carolina on the gridiron - though it was a classic struggle - the outcome was almost pre-scripted. A Tar Heels win. Again.

Sure, N.C. State managed to sneak into a bowl game, though it had no business doing so, and North Carolina did not. But the loss to the Tar Heels in November hardly was healed by a win over South Florida in December in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

Then came springtime, when everything is supposed to bloom anew and the air is filled with optimism. Except in Raleigh, where the N.C. State faithful continued to watch as the men's basketball program got one “no” after another from coaching prospects (it would have been interesting if they'd offered Matt Doherty the job - he might have said yes) and its baseball team prepared to face a top-ranked Tar Heel team.

That matchup came last weekend, when the Wolfpack took a bus to Chapel Hill for a three-game series that could have solidified N.C. State's place among the college baseball elite.

Didn't happen.

The Wolfpack came into the series with a 30-10 record and left with a 30-13 record. And the three-game series featured a Tar Heels whipping of the Wolfpack in three vastly different ways.

Game One on April 21 saw North Carolina's hitting prowess, led by Andrew Miller's four RBI, and a 7-4 Tar Heels win. Strike one.

Game Two on April 22 was a tug-o-war that went to the 12th inning before rain halted play. But in the bottom of the 14th frame the next day, North Carolina won 3-2 on, of all things, a throwing error. Strike two.

Game Three on April 23 was a dominating pitching effort by the Tar Heels' Daniel Bard - one of three outstanding hurlers destined for the big leagues, along with Robert Woodard and Miller - for a 4-0 win that sealed the broom job. Strike three.

That put coach Mike Fox's squad at 34-8 overall, thoroughly justifying the at-or-near-the-top of the national baseball polls for the Heels.

And oh, by the way, the N.C. State golfers didn't fair well that weekend, either. While North Carolina was busy claiming a share of the ACC title (with Georgia Tech) at the Old North State Club in New London, Wolfpack golfers finished fourth, a mere 20 strokes back.

This state's ACC schools, at one time, were thought of as The Big Four.

It appears N.C. State is dropping out - but at least it will have Wake Forest's company.

he could have still nabbed a mid-major coach had he not botched the first 4 negotiations so badly...

seriously, these people CAME TO RALEIGH, which means they were interested, and Fowler managed to screw up the negotions ocmpletely, including the relatively simple task of convincing one of two people to accept 2million+ dollars a year...

sorry, but it's time for him to go

THis post shows a tremendous lack of knowledge on the what has really gone on. Rick Barnes made more money in Texas, already established the program on the next level, and has a pretty secure spot considering the regional competition. John Calipari didn't take the job because he did not think he could recruit with the new academic requirements, not in the ACC, but in the UNC School System (ell a inner city basketball player that he has to take calculus and physics where its not required at Duke, or any other Div 1 school competing with NC state schools. With Belein the buyout negotiation was simply too big to overcome. They looked into it but the board would never approve it simply for his release. With Lavin it is state law that we couldn't even guarantee but 1/3 of what his previous salary at ESPN was. Throw in that his parents and his family have ALWAYS lived in California, that his parents are having health problems, that his fiancee and him are going to start having kids soon, and that ESPN extended his contract through 2012 for a job with one tenth of the stress and its a fucking no brainer.

Firing Lee Fowler would be a bigger mistake than firing Sendek... you wanna talk about looking foolish on a national level.

^^ all i read are excuses... if these reasons were so obvious then why didn't Fowler see them and realize what was happening around him, was he incapable of knowing what was going on while he made our school look like chumps? sorry, but strip away the bullshit and you see that it's simple... Fowler Failed...

you can look at it either way... he Failed to get a name coach... or he Failed in ignoring the wishes of an idiotic fanbase and going for a realistic coach...

so he's either a bad negotiator, or a sheep... take your pick

I couldn't see Barnes leaving Texas. Enough though it's not a "basketball school" per se, he still has the biggest athletic budget in Divison 1A to work with there and still has good recruits in there for next year I think.

they should've gone after calipari right off the bat. If he had turned them down after being the first choice, THEN they should've gone right to a promising mid major coach and locked him up with the quickness. they went after a bunch of "names" and look how that turned out. Not to mention half of the people that they've come up with are complete wastes of space. Mike Brey? I sure hope he wasn't really a candidate. has he gone to the tourney since he's been at notre dame? I know for sure he hasnt' gone in the last two years. Damn, get a fucking clue! Fowler simply could not appease this asinine fan base if public overtures at RIck Barnes or another high profile coach were not made public. We seriously came real close to landing them too... real fucking close. What it comes down to is the other person making a decision... you can't con them into signing a contract. Its not a "failure" when its not something that he has complete control over. The bottom line is that our fanbase seriously overvalued the draw of NC State's position. No one wants tp come to NC State. Its an itneresting job proposal, but you basically are taking on the most difficult job in the country. Pretty much you can't "win" with taking the job, which is why we are getting trashed for running Sendek out. Look, he can't be a bad negotiator if he damn near convinced two high profile candidates from leaving their established programs that were situationally better than NC State in every aspect except basketball history and conference power (which is a double-edged sword because it also means a more difficult job). Get your head out of your ass and try a little bit of logic, or shit, at least do something to find out what actuall went down in each of the situations.

If Fowler had not made Barnes the first and foremost target in the search then he would have been crucified. Its long been a mantra of Sendek-haters that "Barnes would come home in a heartbeat!" Secondly, most of the "names" you heard were never actual candidates. It was a writer here and there throwing ideas out of their ass. There aren't that many coaches in this country better than Herb Sendek. The ones that are have absolutely zero reason to leave where they are and come here... its a deathwish.
