"In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983."

yeah i remember one of the "selling points" of the Starwars(EXXXTREME!) release being that they wouldnt ever EVER release the originals again.

hahah remember when schpielburg used to talk about how he'd never let ET be released onto the after theater consumer market lolz

Who didn't see this coming? Hype up the fact that the original theatrical releases "no longer exist", get some fans to buy something that the really wouldn't have if they had the choice, play it out for a few years until the cash flow slacks up, release what everyone wanted in the first place.

How many times is GL going to get everyone to buy the same 3 movies over and over again? Everyone should just say enough is enough, download the original theatrical releases, and then cut the proof of purchase from their VHS editions and paste it on the DVD case for the copies they burn.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a 6 movie box set with a special extended edition crap Trilogy that includes an additional 30 minutes of footage per film (a la LOTR:EE) that can only be purchased as a 6 movie set. People will buy up the OT again. Expect to see it in a few years - after the sales for this release slump.

Then again I guess everyone is content with buying the OT 5 times over because it isn't as if any new sci-fi movies that have came out lately are worth buying.

I missed the part where it said this release was for a limited time only, so I guess GL will have an OT release every 5 years or so.

oh come on... like anybody didn't see this coming...
although to be honest, i kinda figured they'd wait until Lucas was dead...
i wonder what lame project he's trying to build money for...
at this point, who cares if he's a liar, he's finally giving the people what they wanted the whole damned time, so just roll with it

and Walt Disney wanted to have Snow White run only in theaters and never be released for home viewing

although he may have died before VHS anyway

I just said they'd do this a week ago.

Lo and behold...

I'll be returning a DVD burner...

^^Yeah, Spielberg did this Theatrical release move with ET with the 2002 release. I don't especially like ET, but I bought it real cheap just to have the original version.
