I noticed that they were busying themselves in there when I drove by the other day. Whoa, he closed Cuba. Sadness. 5/5/2006 10:06:39 AM |

I thought I saw evidence of activity in there the last time I walked past. Good to see something come back in there... Should really be good for Hillsborough St.
I actually think the part of Hillsborough just past NCSU wil continue to improve in the next few years. The old Darryl's building will have a new tenant... Unless I heard wrong, the old YMCA is vacating its building, and something else will go in there...the Velvet Cloak is slowly converting to condos, and finally starting to do renovations to the main building after years of neglect...
Hopefully next in line will be a resurgence in the neighborhood south of Hillsborough, off Park Ave. (behind IHOP/Jackpot/etc.) There are some really beautiful old houses back there that are in pretty sad shape right now. Prime candidates for restoration. 5/5/2006 11:39:24 AM |

est est est and cuba are closed due to the fucking mall project?

I think this is a case (at least in the mind of the city council and developers) of temporary pain leading to a better downtown in a couple of years. But it does suck that good, unique restaurants are closing, and it is a little ironic. 5/5/2006 12:07:39 PM |

how the hell did he get the capital to open a new restaurant on this site with two failed businesses, and a bunch of debt? the lease on that site is ~$2 million.
i'm glad something reopened there. i've been saying for like 2 years now that i would open a hooters there, if i had the money. it couldn't be a more perfect spot for one. 5/5/2006 12:10:22 PM |

^x5 - the article said that the new place will serve some of the things that est, est, est served, if that helps
i don't know if it's just the construction/renovation that's slated for july completion, but that doesn't seem to be a really great time to try and open up and get on your feet around here considering a large part of your clientele is going to be scattered just about everywhere but raleigh 5/5/2006 12:51:22 PM |

anyone in here that went to school while darryl's was around and shit? I just missed it, it was here for orientation and stuff, but not when I was going out in raleigh and what not.
My impression is that it's not really that good of a location since it's further down boro than most of the other bars people go to on that street. Is this incorrect? 5/5/2006 12:55:42 PM |

^^^I assumed he was talking about the Fayetteville Street project and not the Darryl's project. I don't think that one's been going on long enough to be 2 months behind.
^It's not that far a walk.

unless the name is just a marketing ploy, hopefully they'll have a nice beer selection

a good demonstration of why reopening fayetteville street to traffic is retarded... i spent 45 mins gridlocked downtown trying to get to the courthouse last week!! 5/5/2006 1:54:11 PM |

This is very good news. The master plan for Hillsborough street has Pullen Rd. continuing straight over hillsborough street and then cutting through the NCSU owned parking lot behind the Darryls building so that there won't be that funky Pullen/Oberlin area down there. I don't know if they'll just close that little portion of Oberlin or not. They should brick it and make it like a huge patio for Players Reteat/Raising Ale. 5/5/2006 2:02:21 PM |

^I like that idea. I think the only driveways on that section of oberlin are for the bank (which could just run one off Hillsborough) and the parking lot. It'll still be kind of an odd interchange, as the rerouted Pullen will probably run right into Groveland (which is currently one-way in the wrong direction), but at least traffic trying to get onto Oberlin won't have to make such a crazy angle turn. 5/5/2006 2:39:10 PM |

Cuba probably closed because it sucked balls. The first time I went there in the beginning of 2005, it was acceptable. Then, I went back two times after that and both times the food was so bad that I am sure that McDonalds could have done a better job with Cuban Food.5/5/2006 8:26:09 PM |

growing up here and having a dad work at the school i must say i really haven't thought twice about darryl's being gone. I mean that side of Hillsborough street is just a throughfare to get to Oberlin 5/5/2006 8:46:42 PM |

Yep. Darryl's used to be a pretty good-sized regional chain, and that location was the original. It made it almost 30 years (I want to say it opened in '74, and closed in '02). At its peak, there were almost 30 Darryl's, including 3 in raleigh (anyone remember the Glenwood or Falls of Neuse locations? Both were still around when I started school here in '98). However, they were owned by Houlihan's, and when Houlihan's started sinking Darryl's went down with them.
There are still two locations though, which I think were bought out by the franchisees or something when the others closed. The older of the two Greensboro locations still exists near Four Seasons Mall; I ate there last year. We asked the server if it was the only one left, and he said there was also one on I Drive in Orlando. I didn't even know there were ever any in Florida. Go figure. 5/5/2006 10:57:07 PM |
