I had two hard drives installed in my computer each with a version of Windows XP.

Now I've taken one of the drives out, how do I make my computer boot from the one drive left.

Windows comes up and tries to run the XP off of the old drive that isn't there anymore, giving me this 'your system has been changed, yada yada' message.

was one of the drives the master and the other the slave?

like did you change the jumpers?

He must have had one master one slave if you threw away the master....have fun reformatting the slave. If you threw away the slave then windows will just want to contact microsoft and tell them that you added another one because "computer settings have changed" Yeah I know why should they have to know????

have you looked at your boot.ini file?
Can you even boot at all?

Yeah this sounds like a BIOS issue. Check your jumpers, check your boot order in the BIOS.


So you say both drives have Windows on them...the big question is was Windows installed on both drives while they were installed in the laptop you're currently using?

Check the boot.ini first. Once it's all in order, then put in the XP CD, go into recovery console, and type "fixmbr" that will restore the Master Boot Record.

Should work after that.

are you trying to keep from re-formatting? if not, connect one drive at a time, just like you did, and whichiever one you can boot from, do it, then connect the other one and restart. then you'll be able to play with settings a little bit
