I saw some at best buy. What's the deal with these? Do you need a special player or will the computer play it in HD if you use DVI on an LCD?
Excuse me if I am lacking the knowledge of some of this new stuff. 5/9/2006 1:07:42 PM |

you need a special player.
I saw a demo at best Buy yesterday, and wasn't impressed much. 5/9/2006 1:09:18 PM |

The demo had "simulated" SD DVD playback...and it sucked...I have never seen DVDs look so bad even in SD TVs.
it was biased. 5/9/2006 1:39:42 PM |

HD DVD seems like a short-sighted solution. Yeah, 30GB seems like all we'd need for now... but this shit blows up faster than we can keep up with most of the time. 5/9/2006 5:18:34 PM |

I think its probably comprable to a high end scaleup dvd player, or a PC until you get to screens upwards of 50"
I bet it would look nice on a projector. 5/9/2006 8:56:44 PM |

HD-DVD (and BluRay) will need to be hooked up to an HDCP compliant device through either DVI or HDMI. If you connect it through any other means (component) then you will likely get a downconverted image.

Yeah, they're simulated SD playback sucked. But honestly, most DVD playback on an HDTV looks like shit unless your HDTV has a good scaler. The simulated SD playback should be granier.5/10/2006 4:44:09 PM |

I'd wait till the standards finish fighting it out or dual format players start appearing. If you have a good upconverting dvd player, there's no point buy hddvd right now. 5/10/2006 5:40:47 PM |

Dual format (Blu-Ray + HD-DVD) DVD players will eventually come out, and that's the ticket. 5/10/2006 7:07:34 PM |

Anyone else find it funny that they have to "simulate" SD now?
I mean really, how fucking hard is it to get a 20 dollar pawn shop tv, a bottom end dvd player, and connect them to show ACTUAL SD? 5/11/2006 12:15:12 AM |

Because standard def doesn't look nearly as bad on a $20 CRT as it does on a $1,000+ HDTV?5/11/2006 10:09:02 AM |

^ Yeah, it really doesn't. Stretching that 640x480 image over much of a 42" hi-def screen looks fairly awful. Probably part of the point right?

my tv is a 42" CRT
but the sonyfags made it so the dvi input requires hdcp :-( 5/12/2006 11:06:30 AM |

yeah, we have the 57" Wega CRT RP. I have no desire to hang a TV on a wall or a ceiling, so it's pretty much just hotness. 5/12/2006 5:02:13 PM |

i have a question.
if i bought a video card capable of HDCP out, do you think i could output it to my tv?
Or will the card not output normal signals as HDCP? 5/12/2006 5:11:31 PM |
Quinn All American 16417 Posts user info edit post |
you could buy an HDCP stripper for around 250-300
"hdcp repeater" usually is what they call them 5/12/2006 5:16:52 PM |

for 250-300 i'd just buy a new video card :-P

I apologize
I gave you the only solution i knew 100% would work.
90% of tww doesnt have an HDTV with dvi/hdmi in
out of the 10% that does, 90% dont know what HDCP is
Good luck, search google 5/12/2006 11:00:38 PM |

Good luck finding a card that actually supports HDCP. The ATI and nVidia sites claim the series they have now are capable of supporting HDCP, but I have yet to see a production card that actually does. Of course, it's been about 3 months since I looked. 5/13/2006 2:22:18 PM |

for those of us who don't know what HDCP is:
Quote : | "HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a specification developed by Intel Corporation to "protect" digital audio and video content as it travels across Digital Visual Interface (DVI) or High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connections. The HDCP specification is proprietary and implementation of HDCP requires a license. It is a form of Digital rights management." |
sounds gay to me...good luck to you
