This is it. The twist will be that there is no twist! Everything is exactly as it seems! No one will see that coming!

Sixth Sense was really the only one that even tried to have a big twist at the end. The fact that the rest of his movies have been judged by that isn't really his fault. The real surprise in Unbreakable was just the direction the plot ended up going. The "twist" at the end was a pretty minor plot point. Signs had nothing resembling a twist. The Village kind of had one, but you could see it coming for the entire movie, so I don't think it was meant to be shocking a la the Sixth Sense, more just confirming and expanding on what you already suspected.
Anyway, I liked all of them. They're really good movies if you take them for what they are and don't go in expecting some startling revelation at the end.
Lady in the Water looks pretty cool. It's kinda hard to pin down what it's going to be, since the tone of the new trailer is so different from the first one. I'll go see it though. 5/16/2006 12:37:38 PM |

I don't know why he's pigeonholed himself into making the movies with a "twist". Signs would have been accepted as pretty much a Hitchcock style suspense movie if he hadn't done the thing with the water and never shown the aliens. What if Hitchcock decided to kill of his main character halfway through the movie for every movie he did after Psycho just because it worked there? It would have been stupid. 5/16/2006 12:50:17 PM |

^^Nope. That was my take on it anyway. The others (except Signs) had their own twists, but Sixth Sense was the only one where it was really a defining feature of the film. It just seems like people are looking for a twist on the level fo Sixth Sense every time they see one of his movies. It's clearly not there, but I'd venture to say that that hasn't really been the intent of the filmmaker.

So you would say a movie about monsters in the 1800s in the woods
where it turns out that 1) there are no monsters, and 2) it isn't the 1800s
isn't defined by those twists?
I mean, aside from the whole metaphor for the Bush administration, there isn't anything else there.

I would.
The Village created doubt from the beginning as to whether or not there were monsters. It wasn't a twist. They took you back and forth believing and disbelieving in them throughout the film. The 1800s thing wasn't that much of a twist because they alluded to it throughout the movie. But that might just be me because I guessed it before I even saw it. Still enjoyed it though. 5/16/2006 12:56:43 PM |

The reason why you, I, and half the literate people in the country guessed it before we saw it is because THERE HAD TO BE A TWIST. This has been said in jest, but seriously, the real fucking twist would have been if it really WAS the 1800s and there were some godddamn monsters.
If M. Night wants to shock 'n' awe people, he needs to make a movie that is 100% conventional without some retarded turn of events that everybody is looking for. Not some shit about an alien invasion thwarted by the fact that they're allergic to the most abundant substance on the planet. 5/16/2006 12:59:47 PM |

I guess I don't see the Village as much of a twist because the information was revealed gradually. There was definite ambiguity surrounding several issues, and the film gradually answered the questions. It wasn't really done in one moment that redefines your understanding of the film, as was the case in Sixth Sense. I guess that's what I'm looking for if you want to talk about a movie that depends on the twist.
I would still argue that Signs had no twist. It was a natural progression. 5/16/2006 1:05:41 PM |

the sixth sense wasn't a twist 5/16/2006 1:13:58 PM |
epeiste New Recruit 36 Posts user info edit post |
I guess it's an arbitrary distinction.
For me, the difference in Sixth Sense was that the viewer was never lead to question what he was seeing. Sure, when you find out at the end it all fits, but up until that point I was never even lead to consider that possibility. In the Village, it was pretty clear up front that something was going on. It was less about shocking you by presenting you with something you'd never even considered and more about creating uncertainty around a few central questions and leading you to waver between believing two possible explanations. I guess either one could be considered a twist, but it's a different kind of twist.
If you broaden the definition too much, damn near every movie made could be called a twist.

^^so if it was intended to be so clear, why was the movie marketed as a scary thriller when it was just supposed to be a parable? if we were supposed to know then all the stuff he did in that movie is worthless. why try to trick us if we are supposed to know?
this review and quote in particular sum up my views quite well:
Quote : | "I contend that great filmmaking rarely involves a scenario whereby the audience is kept in the dark. Instead, the most satisfying situations allow the audience to possess information unavailable to one, or even all of the characters. We are more likely to shrink with fear when we watch an unknowing hero walk into danger that has been established for our benefit, rather than jumping when he jumps. Simply put, if we know the outcome while he doesn't, we can build an emotional connection and hope for an alternative, even if we know that certain doom awaits. By manipulating us in the same way that the elders manipulate the children, Shyamalan is effectively treating us as children, believing that unless we have a hook, we won't follow him on his journey. Perhaps we wouldn't." |

^^^ were you familiar with m. night as a director and his movies before the village? I was and I was expecting a twist. I agree that signs had no twists but it wasn't that good either. But I always, and will always expect it from him until i see different. With sixth sense i had no reason to not take it at face value, after that anything from him I was looking for clues, which could be why you, myself and many other people predicted the ending to the village. Being a shitty, predictable twist doesn't make it any less of a twist. 5/16/2006 4:33:06 PM |

I can deal with The Village having a shitty twist/twists.
I can't deal with the fact that after we get the first shitty twist (OMG MONSTER COSTUMES IN THE FORBIDDEN BARN) he immediately follows with a monster scene that tries to play on fright instead of dramatic irony. IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE. 5/16/2006 4:52:20 PM |

Cleveland and his fellow tenants start to realize that they are also characters in this bedtime story. As Cleveland falls deeper and deeper in love with the woman, he works together with the tenants to protect his new fragile friend from the deadly creatures that reside in this fable and are determined to prevent her from returning home." |
