and the movie companies wonder why they're losing money

I even like watching movies, and I like the theater experience but its just not worth it I may see a movie in a theater on an average of 1/5 months at best.

my wife and I now wait for them to come out on DVD then we rent them

$4 to rent and watch when WE want to and in the comfort of our own home and cheap food

of $8 a piece at regular price...plus say another $10 for a popcorn and 2 drinks = $26

hmm go to the movies for one, or for the same price rent 6.....

now mind you i do go 1-2 times a year...like for xmen and such, but that is about it

I've been to a theater twice in the past 2.5 years. I'm like panthersny, I just wait for the DVD. You can own the movie for the same price as 2 adult tickets.

I just don't go to movies any more. Star Wars and LOtR have been the only movies I have seen in the theater in the last 4 years or so. I like movies, and 've got the Netflix, and since I am so behind, I always have something to watch.

i do the same...rent the ones i want, or nowadays use Icontrol, and rarely go to the theatres. i always go thanksgiving day and christmas day as it's kind of a tradition with my brother and i and our two friends to see a movie during those holidays, and we've always seen good ones. (except Alexander, GAH what a fucking joke!!)

when i go any other time i gotta REALLY wanna see it, last one I saw was Munich...i will definitely see X-men cause to me movies like that should be seen in theatres if you don't have a bomb ass home entertainment system (which i don't).

you folks just go to the wrong movies

when i'm in DC i regularly pay over $20 to go see a movie
($6 in metro fees to and from the theater, $10 ticket, whatever for snackies)

for three simple reasons

1. nothing i can put in my house (yet) can replicate the true cinematic experience
movies are DESIGNED TO BE BIGGER THAN TV
movies are meant to be the focal point

2. renting a movie cuts you out of the community; trolls can call me out for this, but i take pride in seeing a good movie before other people
call it snobbery, call it being an indie poseur, whatever
i like to know about a movie before my friends, and i like to see it before my friends

3. i know how much money i waste on other shit
i'll drop $6 on a meal at chick fil a in a heartbeat, so it would be wrong for me to not be willing to drop $7 on a movie, since i claim to be a movie lover

There are plenty of good movies to see in the theater. There has been a dry spell the last couple months, but there's still the Galaxy, which always has at least one critically acclaimed movie playing. At least we have Da Vinci Code and X3 the next two weekends.

the community aspect is interesting. to further that, by the time something comes out on dvd i've lost any desire to see it usually cuz im excited about something else. theres been plenty of films that this happened to and i never end up seeing them (most are mediocre action films, but probably were worth at least 1 view).

Yeah, that's probably a reason why a lot of people don't go to the movies. Cell phones. People *cough* that feel the need to stand up and shout things at the screen, etc. Then again I don't know if those things are actual problems since I haven't been in so long. I'm just going on hearsay.

$6 in metro fees to get to a theater? Do you go to the one clear across town or what?

Galaxy doesn't have sushi or leather seats, but we do have about 15 kinds of beer.

another reason i don't go to the theatre often, i don't like going alone. just a preference. and it's hard to find people that want to go see some of the movies i want to see.
it's easy to get people to see the newest comedy or action movie...it's harder to get people (well, my people/friends) to see some of the dramas or films that show at galaxy.

[Edited on May 18, 2006 at 1:10 PM. Reason : and it's usually harder to do that b/c of the $$]

Same here. We do movies and eating when we're out and about. Plus we do the movie pass at Blockbuster for all the average movies. We're homebodies and I could care less about being a part of the community when it comes to watching movies. My husband, though, likes the opening night atmosphere.

i should clarify what i meant by "the community"

i did not mean the folks sitting in the theater with you (although there is something to be said about common, shared experiences)

i meant more the smaller subset of the population that still loves and "gets" movies

Yes, that is a Consolidated Theatre owned one...at Ballentyne. Thought long and hard about going to work there.

Anyways, back to the subject at hand...

Movies are a form of entertainment. They are also one of the cheapest forms of entertainment. It's like what...under $5 and hour. Compare that to tickets to sporting events or concerts and you will see that it isn't that expensive.

On a side note, as far as concession prices go... theaters make almost all of their profits from concession stands. Depending on certain deals, up to 90% of all ticket money goes straight to hollywood. That popcorn and drink you buy pays for the guy who sold you your tickets, the guy who tore the ticket, the guy who sold you your food, the electricity to run the place, the guy who is going to pick up the popcorn bag and cup you leave behind...etc etc.

I know this isn't really "news" but neither is anything else in this thread.

just become friends with managers at movie theaters.

then you see movies for free...

you pay for the peanut m&m's and drink...let's face it...you don't get too many bad m&m's or drinks...then if the movie sucks...you're out of the money you paid for your snacks...and you still support the theater.

i'd like to see how movie companies manage to lose money when movies gross so much
what are they spending so much money on?

^good point, but i think they still have to pay a price for having the movie there, something like $5000

^^Lafta,
Movie companies spend a lot of money on things you never get to see. Paying multiple people tons of money to write scripts, then chosing one....then sometimes throwing it away, advertising, distribution, paying the talents is most of it...

Here's the plan. Don't go to see any movie that's:

A) a remake of an older movie/TV show
B) Based on a true story
C) Inspired by true events.

Then, if someone you know is going to see a movie that falls under the three categories mentioned above, beat them up and steal their keys.

Soon they'll HAVE to make better movies so people won't get beat up and have their keys stolen.

Unforetunately some theaters seem to be combatting this problem by shrinking the size of the screens so they can fit more screens in the same amount of space

Whosajiggawhat?

I know that Brier Creek and North Hills do have a few very small screens, but if you see anything in the first few weeks of its release it will be on one of the huge ones.

I definitely remember being in a small screen auditorium at Brier Creek once, but I couldn't blame them because we were seeing A Dirty Shame. At the same time, when I saw RoTK there, I think it was in the widest cinema auditorium I've ever seen.

people ...every theater (atleast every one I've ever been to) has various sized screens/auditoriums.

The newer or better movies will get the biggest screens in the house, because the size of the screens is proportional to the size of the auditorium (amount of seats)

so the older a movie is, or technically the less tickets it sells, the more likely it will be in a smaller auditorium and have a smaller screen.

are we really talking about this?

Yes I know they have different sized screens.

My girlfriend begged me to take her to see Red Eye. Already not a huge movie, but we saw it a few weeks after the release. We walk into the theater, and there are about 30 seats in this room, and the screen, I shit you not, could not have been much more than 100 inches diagonal.

The theater should have to post that outside before you buy your fucking tickets. I never would have paid $9 for a ticket, when I have a 42 inch TV at home.
