On a ball that is hit in the corner of the outfield that will be a for-sure triple, what happens if the outfielder tosses the ball out of bounds and into the stands... isn't that ruled a ground-rule double?

No


The runner would be allowed to advanced one base past the last base he touched. So if he's rounding 2nd he gets to 3rd automatically. Not sure what would happen if he's already reached 3rd and the guy throws it out of bounds.. Maybe he gets to go home..

OR

Most likely it would be a double and he would be granted an extra base..

^^^if he's allready rounded third and the fielder tosses it into the stands, i'm guessing he was making it home anyway. what you said is correct. I do believe that an umpire is allowed some lattitude in judging where the runner would end up.

It is up to the umpire's descretion if he would have made it to third or not.

Usually they get together and make the call for a triple.

there's also a rule that it's two bases if thrown out of play by an outfielder...so, the umpires could just rule that the runner gets two bases from where he was when the ball was thrown out of play

You're right... it's 2 bases on throws from the outfield. If the runner has round second base when the outfielder releases the throw to third and it sails into the stands, the baserunner would be allowed third base and home. Therefore, he'd receive a double in the book with a 2 base error.
