There is occasionally a black/brown shepard mix female dog loose behind the 2100 apartment complex of UWoods. I believe that it resides in the 102 apartment. Today in the blazing afternoon sun it was wandering around around the 2120 apartment complex. Upon approaching the dog it was rather skittish--always holding it's tail down (very submissive), always flinching whenever I held out my hand to pet it, and afraid of shadows. It would appear from this cursory inspection that the dog is abused.
After following it back to the apartment where it lives I saw that it had slipped it's "leash"--a 20-30ft. long section of rope that had been tied in a slipknot fashion towards the end--whenever the dog got to the end of the leash it would almost surely be strangled. I also saw no water bowl or food bowl in the surrounding area.
If you are going to own a dog, please take proper care of it. Tags identifying it's owner, name, and rabies shots are essential. Seeing a dog that almost never wags it's tail and always holds it's head way down when you attempt to pet it are almost always signs of abuse. If you wish to keep your dog outside in the afternoons please provide adequate water and food and let it stay on an actual leash--not something that you throw around it's neck to choke it. Letting the dog run loose will most likely result in it being killed on the roadways (or picked up by animal control and euthanized)--but tying a slipknotted rope around it's neck is not the way to prevent this.
If the owners of this dog happen to read this, please PM me. If you do not want your dog I will be more than happy to take it off your hands.

This dog is always running around loose without an owner in sight. It gets really frustrating to see how little people can care about an animal. If they can't be bothered to supply it with at the very least water and a proper leash when leaving it outside, then how can they be bothered to take it to the vet to get the care it needs.

i was wondering where that dog comes from... i wouldn't just take their dog though, that's not right either, you are better off reporting it if you really have evidence of abuse. 5/23/2006 2:40:50 PM |

That's the problem, I didn't notice any signs of physical abuse--only emotional. However I suppose that you could say that being skittish is a sign of prior physical abuse. 5/23/2006 2:41:58 PM |

well a dog being skittish doesn't ALWAYS mean abuse by current owner.
I have a dog that is super skittish but that's not from my doing.
sounds to me that maybe someone found the dog, knew where he lives, tied him up there. I don't see why an owner would tie his dog outside like that, esp at U woods 5/23/2006 2:57:02 PM |

The apartment the dog finally went back to had people in it and they let the dog inside. So they knew the dog was outside and by simply looking out their window, could tell that it was no longer attached to the rope.
So they full well knew this dog was outside without a leash and without someone watching it to make sure it wasn't hurt. Seeing that they planned to leave the dog outside without someone with it, they also didn't think the dog would need any water. 5/23/2006 3:01:27 PM |

back in the day when i lived there, i about got attacked by some dude's mutt walking into the building (2130)
i froze, rather than run, as he growled, barked and curled up...must have sat there like a statue for 5 minutes, felt like 30 though...finally the owner in one of the back apts heard IT and calls it in to his apt. my adrenaline was going about a gallon a minute, and i was not about to let this aggression stand. so i went and let the guy know to keep it on a leash or i would call the dog catcher, or whatever it was called. didn't see it out again, but made me wonder, why do you just let your mangy and aggressive dog roam the streets.
too bad rudy wasn't with me, he could have shot it 5/23/2006 11:45:12 PM |

She's outside now.
With no one out with her. In the parking lot. At night.
Yeah. Great pet skills.
I'd try and get her, but she's too skittish to let someone really near her. 5/24/2006 11:13:30 PM |

Call the humane society, call the ASPCA. Call someone. If a pet is being abused they will rescue it and, if serious abuse or neglect is apparent with the dog, they can file charges. Or they can just ask the owners if it's okay that they keep the dog because the owners don't appear to be able to take care of it. Then one of you all can rescue it. 5/24/2006 11:31:52 PM |

call someone already, what more encouraging do you want? if it upsets you that bad, do something about it. There's no point in complaining if you aren't going to do anything about it. 5/25/2006 1:18:54 PM |

Try to lure the dog with food or water. Take her in and see if the owners actually look concerned or try to find her. If she's a shepherd mix, and it's Australian shepherd, she may naturally be skittish from being that kind of breed. It doesn't sound like they watch over her well and you don't want to call animal control. If you do she'll likely waste away in the facility until they put her down, especially since 1) she's an adult, 2) she's nervous around people, and 3) Wake Co. animal shelter just had, or is still experiencing, a respiratory breakout and were closed while battling it. I don't know if it's still going on, but was a week ago. It's a slow season for adoptions except for young puppies. I've had a foster pup for nearly two months now, and it's typically only taken about two weeks to get them adopted out. 5/26/2006 6:48:53 PM |

Yeah in this case i wouldn't call animal control. They will take her to the intake facility in Garner and she will never make it over to the Curtis Dail Adoption Center if she is skiddish. The only thing to do here is someone catch her and show her some love. She can be trained to trust people and then find a home! 5/28/2006 11:05:30 PM |

Why don't one of you that live there and know where the owner lives try to contact them. Either by knocking on the door and blatently asking whether they are planning to care for their dog. Or leaving a note with a phone number. Maybe this guy would be relieved if someone took her into foster care. Also find out if she is spayed. Who cares if the guy is rude. We will find some more information to which extreme the dog needs help. 6/24/2006 9:40:45 AM |
