if you actually enjoy your career, why would you rub it in peoples' faces? insecurity? are you really not as happy as you claim?

that said, I've been trying to find something I'll fit right into for a while. for me, that means going back to get another undergraduate degree, it seems... not so bad though once you have one. getting a second is pretty fast

i just like what i do and i think it is rare. i like to hear that other people like theirs. i also like to know why people dont like theirs. i dont think asking rubs it in anyones face. just because your job sucks and your glass is half empty doesnt mean i am insecure.

There's a simple division in life of 2 things: work and leisure.

Work can never be leisure, leisure can never be work. You may "think" that if your favorite leisure pastime was "your job", you'd enjoy it. But eventually, whatever pays your bills and feeds your governmental responsibilities will become work, thus forfeiting the title of "leisure".

Wisdom I tell ya. The quicker people realize this, the quicker they can suck it up and just get through work to get on with living.

i love my career.

i know sometimes people with less experience in other careers may get more money than people with greater in my career, but i have found it very satisfying from day to day.

I enjoy my field of work immensely.

Certainly some days/projects are better than others, but overall few complaints.

i love my career as well...i like what i do, who i work for and the people i've met so far through my work have been pleasant to work with and good sources of info if i run into a problem or need to get out of a jam real quick. overall, no complaints. i also like the possibility of freelancing later and work from home...who knows if i'll ever do it, but the option is there.

I love what I do, but it'll definitely be something that I'll have to move away from once we start having kids. Working 60-70 hours a week does not make for a healthy family life.

My dream job, though, is to be a high school teacher. But that'll come after financial independence.

You're also the guy that thinks making in the upper 5 figures in the bay area is a lot of money.

wtf

Anyway...

To the guy who thinks you have to "suck it up" at work everyday -- that's the same attitude a lot of people have. These people want nothing more than for 8 hours of their day (read: the bulk of their day) to pass as fast as possible. Before they know it, their life is over for the sake of getting to a couple of weekends.

That's sucks that you have to "suck it up" to make it through every day. Sometimes I lose track of time and suddenly it's 9p.m., but i was so engrossed in a problem that I was trying to solve that I didn't even notice the time fly by. I thoroughly enjoy what I do.

My dream job is to be a race car driver (NOT NASCAR) so in order for that to happen I need to be very rich, which probably won't happen.

Best I can hope for is to some day be able to blow $20-30k a year in an amateur race series...

I thoroughly enjoy what I do, too. The time does fly at work, but I do wish I was spending a little less time doing it. Once I get a few more clients, I won't be required to spend as much time at it anymore.

The issue isn't over whether or not I'd like to be there for 8 hours a day, because I would. The issue is over whether or not I'd rather be at home in time to see the beginning of a sporting event for once, or to catch a movie that will end at a reasonable hour.

There are guys in my office that work about 7-15 hours a week now, though. And they're making some killer bank. So I know it can be done. That's why I'm keeping at it, and probably also why I love it.

I've been really wondering about this lately and I don't know what to do.

I went to State for a while, stopped going, got a job, and worked my way up to a comfortable level in terms of income, I guess. I own a house and whatever, but I don't have any benefits. I theoretically could stay in the same business for the rest of my life, but I'd probably kill myself or somebody else from the stress and the tedium. I need to go back to school eventually, but I have no idea what I should go for.

So, yeah. I don't love my career. I need to find something that I will love. Or at least something that I can enjoy, or at least something with some damn insurance and paid vacation.

I dont know if it is a career, but i enjoy disaster work. Been doing disaster work for 16ish months.

Missed the past two xmases, this time out i missed xmas and birthday, so i got xmas gifts and birthday gifts when i get back, been on the road this time 10 months and counting and hurricane season is right around the corner.

I get paid well and per diem isnt taxed so that adds to it and a couple months ago I got a grade increase since i had accumulated a year

Love what I do, do what I love... there is no greater job... financially I won't ever get rich, but it's enough to allow me to do the things I want to do, and gives great benefits, satisfaction, and plenty of time off...

for the first time in my life, I enjoy getting up and going to work everyday

I know that everyday I will do something different and it will still be fun, interesting and educational... not to mention it will pay me well

we deal with clients all over the country, have a TV show that will be airing soon on OLN, and I get to hunt and fish at some of the nicest places in North America

haha yea right why kid yourself. you're not going anywhere. I remember reading your elitist editorials in technician back in 1999... thinking what a moron you were - and hey look, you really are. and a drop-out to boot

I started writing for Technician in, I think, 2001. Maybe 2002. I never wrote editorials. I mostly did record reviews.

i like my job a lot. i'm not in the office very much. no one really tells me what to do, or second guesses anything i do. not to mention the all expenses paid, full personal use company car. would i show up for free? no. so i guess you could say i don't love it, in a lot of ways it's as good as a job gets.

Mine's pretty awesome so far, even if my first day isn't for a week. I was hanging out with my roommate and one of the other guys we work with, and we bitched about the money we're making, but we still love what we're doing and where we're doing it. The corporate culture can't be beat, and the people are just awesome. Very minimal supervision, because they just trust us to get our shit done, which is awesome. Hell, we don't even have sick days. If we're sick we just don't show up.
