http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,197083,00.html

i just bought this the other day as an upgrade to our corporate server software which is currently on v8.1...I upgraded the license just to make sure we would get all the latest virus definitions but I was waiting until this weekend to upgrade the software version from 8.1 to 10.1

now thats not gonna happen, not until they get this shit fixed

Symantec lost my business years ago when they spent more time trying to prevent piracy than they did actual security.

i've heard some negative things about them but in my experience they've usually been pretty good as far as virus protection

now i completely agree/admit that their install/uninstall/upgrades are always a clusterfuck...half the time you have to manually delete some of the \Common Files\ or \Symantec Shared\ files just to be able to upgrade to a new version of something

version 9 of the corporate edition (which is free through ncsu) is great, i've had no problems with it in any way

We run 10.0.2 at ECU and have not had any problems with it. I also read about this security flaw on Slashdot earlier today and wondered if we'd see any issues as a result. So far none...but it is the weekend....Tuesday could be a different story.

the hack has not been released supposedly, and will not until nav is patched....so we should have nothing to worry about yet

I'm kind of ignorant on NAV. What makes version 10 better than version 8? Shouldn't version 8 be good enough if it is using the same virus definitions as version 10?

^basically...the virus definition lists are the same so hypothetically they should protect you from the same viruses

but i'm sure the new versions are supposed to have a few more bells and whistles, better mass-deployment options for multiple simultaneous workstation install packages, etc

^ I wish they'd focus on making them more efficient and not add more "bells and whistles."

the corporate versions are very efficient, its the home/retail version that's bloated. version 10 has spyware/malware protection, better email scans, and protection against threats that try to disable virus protection and change windows settings.

the article is very vague and sounds like media sensationalism. the only educated guess I can come up with is someone dns poisoning machines that tricks symantec into pointing at a hacked "definitions" server and malicious code is downloaded and executed by the client. otherwise where else could the attack come from? symantec doesn't just listen on random ports.
