Anyone have any idea of why a portion Tryon is closed? Heading towards Raleigh from Cary, the road is blocked just after Avent Ferry. There are all kinds of fire trucks/police/news vans, but I couldn't see any reason the road would be shut. WRAL doesn't have any info yet. So, if you use Tryon to get home (like me!) find another route!

i'm pretty sure there was a bad accident and the cops behavior made it appear to be a fatal accident

A car (or the remnants of the car) was wrapped around a pole or a tree.

Yeah, i saw that, too. It's right there at Dover Farm road. I couldn't really tell what the deal was, but looked serious and there was yellow police tape all around a car.

"One Killed When Raleigh Police Pursuit Ends In Crash

POSTED: 10:51 pm EDT May 31, 2006
UPDATED: 11:16 pm EDT May 31, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- One person was killed after a police pursuit ended in a crash Wednesday night in Raleigh.

Sources told WRAL that a Raleigh police officer had been pursuing the suspect inside the vehicle before backing off the chase. At that point, the Highway Patrol reportedly picked up the pursuit. The vehicle sideswiped a van before crashing into a telephone pole near the intersection of Avent Ferry Road and Dover Farm Road.

There is no word yet on the identity of the suspect or the reason for the pursuit. As of 10:30 p.m., Tryon Road remained closed as investigators worked at the scene."

"In a report released Thursday morning, Raleigh police said that the suspect was traveling west on Tryon Road at about 105 mph when the suspect's car crested a hill and hit a van that was turning from Dover Farm Street onto Tryon Road.

The car, driven by Alecyn E. Ross, 39, of 100 Lomond Lane, Cary, hit the van while going 90 mph, police said in a report.

Ross' car, a 2001 Mercury, hit two trees, traveled another 44 feet and hit a utility pole. The pole was forced more than 3 feet into the car, the police report said."

i was in my backyard on Dillard Dr. when i heard the police sirens and then three loud bangs. I thought maybe a shotgun. Continued to hear the sirens so I drove on down and saw the crash about 1/2 mile down the road. I was alarmed at how loud the crash was from so far away, must have really been hauling.

If she had slid over a few more feet she would have took out the driver of that mini van with her.

usually it's written in the policy of many police departments that they will not engage in high speed chases - to protect citizens, etc.

ps - i'm glad my mom warned me about it when I was on my way back to my townhouse last night... otherwise, I'd have been right in the middle of the delay as well
