Quote :
"TORONTO -- Jason Williams thinks he's ready to return to the NBA after sitting out three years while recovering from a motorcycle crash.

Williams, the former No. 2 NBA draft pick, is in Toronto working out for the Raptors, and likes what he sees in the young team and new general manager Bryan Colangelo.

"The thing I like about Toronto is the winning atmosphere," said Williams. "Guys want to win, guys want to be great players, and you can't say that about every franchise. They're definitely on the right path there to getting better.

"I love the style (Colangelo) brings to the team," he added. "We worked a lot pushing the ball, he wants to play that kind of fast tempo. And you've guys like Chris Bosh on your wing and Mo Pete can stretch out the defense, and (Charlie) Villanueva can shoot the ball, the possibilities are exciting."

In June 2003, Williams crashed his new motorcycle into a light pole, fracturing his pelvis, tearing knee ligaments and damaging nerves in his left leg. He hasn't played in the NBA since.

The Chicago Bulls, who drafted Williams, honored one year of his contract even though he violated a standard clause. They waived him in February of 2004 after reaching a settlement on the remaining two years. The buyout was reportedly worth about $3 million.

Jim Kelly, the Raptors' director of player personnel, said while Williams is "very fit," it remains to be seen whether he's ready to return to the NBA.

"He's pressing for that, but to be honest, we haven't seen him in a full-court game," said Kelly.

Williams insists he's good to go.

"I actually think I'm ready to play now." "

Williams was hated by many (including me) but everytime he had the ball in college, he could create his own shot, leaving teams defenseless against his skills. I'd say he was th best point guard in the ACC post 94.

he was damn good

i still remember when duke was beating us by 20 at the half and the only halftime highlights they showed were williams bricking a dunk and airballing a 3.

ever since i read his letter about trying to recover from the crash, i've been hoping he'd make it back to the nba.

Reading this excerpt about Jason is pretty amazing to see how far he has come since the accident. I find it pretty incredible.

I never realized how loaded that duke team was until you watch that video. Almost every guy on that team is in the NBA now.

you obviously didn't see the 99 team, although the 99 and 01 had several players in common in Nate James, Carawell, and Battier. But the 99 team Brand, Avery, Langdon, and Battier (99) was better than Jay Will, Boozer, Dunleavy, and Battier (01)

^^no....brand might trump Dunleavy and Boozer, but Williams pwns avery and langdon put together. I'd take the 01 team over the 99 team I think.

Oh I just thought since Johnny Dawkins, K's right hand man, who was quoted as saying that the 99 team was the most talented team he'd ever coached had some merit

I've never heard of Johnny Dawkins

But I hear he might be retarded also, so whats your next question?

I'll take a team lead by Jason Williams over a team led by William Avery who only left because he didnt have a brain to pass his classes with.

people who say duke 99 was the best team ever are really overreacting. it was a great team but you gotta remember that alot of those guys like battier's class were young and not the same players they ended up being yet.

that 99 team had 4 guys drafted in the top 20. I understand the age argument, but Brand was the number one pick, and he was ready. I don't think you can really compare the fact that the 99 team was a runner up and that the 01 team won it because the 99 team could have easily won it against UCONN, and the 01 team was down by more than 20 in the semi's against an inferior Maryland. All this talk about Dook I brought on myself is making me sick, I'm done here.

Nets invite Jay Williams to camp
By DAVID PORTER, Associated Press Writer
Thu Aug 24, 4:12 PM ET

NEWARK, N.J. - Jay Williams' bid to resurrect his NBA career after a serious motorcycle crash three years ago has brought him to New Jersey, where he worked out for Nets officials and has been invited to training camp.

Kevin Bradbury, who represents Williams, said the Nets invited the former Duke star and No. 2 draft pick to training camp in October. Williams hasn't played in the NBA since his 2002-2003 rookie season when he averaged 9.5 points for the Chicago Bulls.

Nets general manager Ed Stefanski said Thursday that Williams had given "strong indications" that he was interested in accepting the invitation.

Williams crashed his motorcycle into a light pole in June 2003, fracturing his pelvis and tearing knee ligaments. He was hospitalized for 3 1/2 months and had nerve damage in his left leg. The Bulls bought out his contract for about $3 million.

Williams is considering the offer and no contract has been signed yet, Bradbury said. The Nets are expected to have a full roster of 15 players under contract, which means Williams would not receive any guaranteed money.

"That allows us to get a look at him, plus the whole league gets a look at him," Stefanski said. "I haven't met a much nicer kid than Jay. He has unbelievable desire. If anybody has the drive to make it back into the league, he does."

Bradbury said Williams has held workouts for several teams over the last two months, including Phoenix, Seattle, Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Lakers. He also participated in Steve Nash's annual charity game in Vancouver last month.

"He used to be one of the explosive guys you'd ever seen, and he's not that type of player any more," Bradbury said. "He's not going to rise up on you like he used to. But he still has good foot speed and lateral movement, and he can still get by a guy in either direction.

"He's working really hard on extending the range of his jump shot because he knows he has to have those things to compete at this level again."

Williams, from Plainfield, N.J., led Duke to the national title as a sophomore. He was a two-time All-American and the 2002 AP college player of the year.
