Well, it's always really hot. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 that's less than a year old, and the battery is ALWAYS hot. The computer randomly shuts off a lot because it's overheated, and this will even happen when it's sitting on my dresser/desk, not necessarily on the floor, or my pant-covered leg (which also happened to leave me with a burn mark the size of an Eggo waffle). Why's it doing this? Do I just need a new battery? This is running on AC power too, not just the battery itself.

Does it mainly happen when the battery was drained before plugging it in? My laptop also gets warm (not super hot like yours) when I am plugged in and the battery is also charging. I suspect that your battery is charging too fast and is adding a large amount of heat.

I don't know if there is any remedy to this.

i used to have a compaq with the same problem. Ended up that I needed to get the motherboard replaced, but about a year later, the same problem started happening and my battery life was significantly lower, even with a new battery

I never have the battery out, and I never drain it. It stays plugged in about 90% of the time, and when it's unplugged, it's never for too long since my shit Compaq battery only lasts for about 1.5 hours. It also feels kind of like the place where you plus in the AC power cord is a little hot too. Again, this is hot enough to burn the shit out of my leg - I look like a leopard.

you need to look at this recall by HP (also makers of compaq). my battery was doing the samething---overheating, even when not in the computer--and i got a free battery sent to me, even though my actual model number was not apart of the recall (2 numbers off). it looks like the V1000 is included in the recall, but your V2000 isnt. they may have not had enough complaints about it to recall.

just call compaq, tell them your battery has burned you because it is so hot, even when the AC power is being used--- exaggerate a little if need be, and they'll send you a new one free of charge. worked for me.

here are the recall notices:
