Anyone else use this thing? It's like Pandora for movies.

Eh, I'm happy enough with what Netflix recommends based on my ratings. It does a pretty good job.

I guess I need to put more bad movies on this thing- it seems to think 70% means the movie was terrible.

This thing seems to be feeding me releases no older than 2000. And nothing independent or foreign. Boo-urns.

Yeah, I definitely had to do some searching for certain things- and sometimes I had to use the foreign title because they used a different translation.

Maybe I should stop liking Asian films.

That's the worst thing about Netflix.

Rent one anime and they decide you're a Japanophile for life.

Gah, this shit is irritating. I have a hard time comparing my level of enjoyment for, say, a German romantic comedy with, I don't know, The Island or something. Gah.

Hahaha, Japanophile!

I've seen more Chinese films than Japanese, really- does Miyazaki count in the anime movie category? Other than a few of his, and Ichi I don't actually think I've seen many Japanese movies. I stopped watching anime in middle school, when I gave up Sailor Moon (shhh, don't tell anyone).

Oh snap, we disagree on things already! You'd best add more movies so the tiers even out, I guess.

I haven't seen enough of Chinese or Japanese film. I was in a kind of wu-xia phase for a bit, but that didn't last long. But yeah, Miyazaki is definitely anime. Grave of the Fireflies will break your fucking heart. My specialty is snooty indie and foreign shit released in the last five or so years (shocking!).

OMG, I would've never guessed.

I had a really severe Yimou Zhang phase, so that's how I got into Chinese stuff.

I've heard good things, just haven't gotten to it. I've become so lazy lately.

Wait, I take it back- I did see Eros, and he did my favorite of the three stories in that (plus he used Gong Li, whom I totally love), so I'm sure other things would be good.

I never did see Eros.

I'm always kind of conflicted with him, because I really hate adding slow motion in post. Shooting fast for slow motion is beautiful, but going in later and slowing it down looks like shit. He does this CONSTANTLY. I know of no other person who is so bothered by this technique. So I have no problem recommending him to other people. You should definitely check out Chungking Express or Fallen Angels. 2046 is pretty good, too, but it's kind of all over the place.

I have too many high rankings. I'm either really forgiving or I can't remember enough movies I didn't like.

Also, welcome to the spookyjon/evermagenta discussion thread.

Okay, so they used optical fades, for the most part, in Brick. It's not something you'd see in most films made in the past 30 years. Things get all super-grainy in the fade, and it's beautiful.

I don't know if normal humans care about these things.

Why, 'cause they usually resort to digital zooms now, or just leave them out all together?

I mean, even on most cameras optical zooms look a lot better.

Not zooms, fades.

Like, at the end of a scene: fade to black. But Brick did the old fashioned optical effect that films used back in the days before computers existed.

Digital zooms would only be used in a film as a last resort, and, well, they should probably just never ever do that. I can imagine some sort of doomsday scenario in which they had footage of a scene that had to be zoomed, and there was no way to reshoot it because the DP was dead and the actors all had the bird flu, but short of that, it shouldn't happen.

I'm not saying it doesn't.

But it shouldn't.

But hey, one of them is your 100. So it's cool.

But music is very important, I gave Space Jam an 80 for the soundtrack alone
