is today and tomorrow

MLB.com is webcasting the 1st round live, starting at 12 noon with a draft preview special

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/a...2006&fext=.jsp

The draft order is as follows:
1. Royals
2. Rockies
3. Devil Rays
4. Pirates
5. Mariners
6. Tigers
7. Dodgers
8. Reds
9. Orioles
10. Giants
11. Diamondbacks
12. Rangers
13. Cubs
14. Blue Jays
15. Nationals
16. Brewers
17. Padres
18. Phillies (from Mets for type A Wagner)
19. Marlins
20. Twins
21. Yankees (from Phillies for type A Gordon)
22. Nationals (from Athletics for type B Loaiza)
23. Astros
24. Braves
25. Angels (from Indians for type B Byrd)
26. Dodgers (fron Angels for type A Weaver)
27. Red Sox
28. Red Sox (from Yankees for type A Damon)
29. White Sox
30. Cardinals

Supplemental First Round
31. Dodgers (for Weaver)
32. Orioles (for Ryan)
33. Giants (for Eyre)
34. Diamondbacks (for Worrell)
35. Padres (for Hernandez)
36. Marlins (for Burnett)
37. Phillies (for Wagner)

40. Red Sox (for Damon)
41. Yankees (for Gordon)
42. Cardinals (for Morris)
43. Braves (for Furcal)
44. Red Sox (for Mueller)

It looks like KC is leaning towards picking Luke Hochevar, who was drafted by the Dodgers last year but didn't sign. In my opinion, this is a bad move for KC, b/c they are not exactly frugal with their money, and Hochevar wants an enormous amount of money up front.

One of my customers is a Giants scout, and we were talking about who they were looking at. I mentioned Andrew Miller from UNC, and he said that they would probably have no shot at it, but looking at this:http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/a...ives&fext=.jsp, he may be wrong

Try that

and Miller wants a huge signing bonus, so he will probably fall

I'm pretty interested in this draft. I know a few guys who have a very decent shot at getting selected today or tomorrow.

teams are awarded picks in the supplemental round when they lose marquee players to free agency

what are the chances of these guys actually paying their bills and making a living outta baseball?

I mean, I have no clue about baseball drafts since there's so many "other leagues" to pass through before the MLB.

My roomate from freshman year is Chris Hatcher. With Hatcher going in the fifth round, it marked the highest pick of a Seahawk since the 1996 draft when the St. Louis Cardinals drafted Wilmington native Bryan Britt in the third round. It was also the first time in school history that UNCW had two players picked in the first 10 rounds of the 50-round event. I am pretty sure if you get picked in the top 5 rounds you want to go. Oh yeah and John Raynors cocky ass went in the 9th rd...to the marlins...i think he will go as well. He is from right around here in Benson and I never understood why state didn't go after him???

I cannot believe Gib fell to the 11th round....hopefully he will come back for his senior year now and keep kicking ass.

Also it really surprised me that Diaz got picked when he isn't much of an offensive threat.

Yeah but he was amazing defensively this year. I think defensive shortstops are becoming more of an attraction than they used to be. Think Red Sox.. they had the hitting, didnt need it at SS just needed a good defensive SS so they get Gonzalez. Maybe surprised he got picked as high

"Bates, Still Taken Early By Red Sox
Walls, Hobson, Diaz, Camp also taken on draft's first day

June 6, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Boston Red Sox took NC State's juniors Aaron Bates and Jon Still in back-to-back rounds Tuesday during the first day of Major League Baseball's First Year Player Draft.

The Red Sox selected Bates in the third round as the 83rd player selected with a pick awarded to them from the Los Angeles Dodgers for the loss of free agent third baseman Bill Mueller. Bates, the Wolfpack's first baseman the last two seasons after coming to Raleigh as a catcher from San Jose State, went in the eighth round to the Florida Marlins a year ago as a draft-eligible sophomore, but opted to return to NC State for his junior season. Although he did not match the .425 batting average he put up in 2005, Bates had a strong season and finished with a flourish, going 10-for-18 at the NCAA Austin Regional to finish the season batting .354 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs.

The Red Sox took Still in the fourth round as the 133rd overall selection. A transfer from Stetson, Still came to NC State as a catcher but spent most of the season as the Wolfpack's designated hitter. The Red Sox selected Still as a catcher. Still, who went 8-for-18 with two homers at the NCAA Austin Regional, batted .350 with eight home runs and 58 RBIs in his only season at NC State.

Six rounds passed following Still's selection before righthander Sam Walls heard his name called. The Philadelphia Phillies took Walls in the 10th round as the 307th overall pick. The Wolfpack's closer in 2006, Walls posted a 5-4 record, eight saves and a 2.89 ERA.

Junior righthander Gib Hobson, who eliminated regional host and No. 3 national seed Texas in the Austin Regional, was next, the 11th-round pick of the San Francisco Giants as the 326th overall pick. Hobson's late-season heroics included complete-game victories over North Carolina in the ACC Tournament and Texas in the Austin Regional. Both the Tar Heels and Longhorns were ranked in the national top five at the time. Hobson finished the year with a 10-2 record and a 4.74 ERA.

Jonathan Diaz, NC State's acrobatic shortstop, became Toronto's 12th-round pick, the 360th player taken in the draft. Although Diaz hit just .255 as a junior, his often-spectacular defense proved to be too much for the Blue Jays to pass on. Diaz saved the Wolfpack's elimination game vs. UT-Arlington in the Austin Regional with several incredible plays, and has been a three-year highlight reel for the Pack defensively.

The Chicago Cubs made senior center fielder Matt Camp their 13th-round selection. Camp rebounded from a sub-par junior season to earn third-team All-America honors as a senior by hitting .387 with 22 doubles, two home runs, 46 RBIs, 64 runs scored and nine stolen bases. In nine postseason games, including the ACC Tournament and NCAA Austin Regional, Camp batted .375 (15-for-40) with four doubles, one triple, seven RBIs and nine runs scored. He wound up fifth in NC State history in hits and runs scored, and this season became just the fifth player in school history to record 100 or more hits in a season.

What will Jeff do? I'd sign the deal if I was him.
