the rooney's took a chance on cowher. they gave him as much time as he needed. i don't think he will turn around and leave as soon as he reaches success. he'll stay at least a few more years and keep winning.
i'll be surprised if he steps down before 2009-2010 6/9/2006 6:11:53 PM |

i dont think amato would just step down even if it was to cower he would leave and get his own team amato would be a kick ass DC though he's basically a DC now with head coach priviledges 6/9/2006 9:13:43 PM |

Maybe he can keep the HC title and bring cowher on as a special assistant. When we need to make big decisions, he can secretly defer to cowher. 6/9/2006 9:21:33 PM |

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/peter_king/08/06/mmqb/4.html I still think its a long shot (and am not calling for Amato's head), but interesting nonetheless.

I don't know what to think, to be honest. But there's too much smoke here. The coach's family moves to North Carolina. He's told friends the grind is getting to him. (And why wouldn't it? Coaching the Steelers must be two things -- incredibly fun and all-consuming.) Hey, I'm not predicting the future here. I'm just saying what so many wagging tongues are whispering around the league: that Cowher's 15th year coaching the Steelers might -- and I stress might -- be his last." |

cowher will never coach state
and i'm not really that worried that he'll retire in the next couple of years either, with the potential the steelers have to win more super bowls in the next several years.
if coach whiz doesn't leave to take a head coaching position for another team after this season though, then i would start to worry about cowher leaving. 8/7/2006 2:05:27 PM |

he's been saying this for years. He has been coaching the steelers for 15 years. Pretty long tenure.

the way i see it, he's put in all these years of hard work and it's finally paying off. they are a top team again and have gotten another ring. some people would be satisfied with that, and see it as the perfect way to end a coaching career. i think if this were the case he would have retired before this season.
others have more of a killer instinct. this super bowl win is like blood in the water, and there's a great potential for 1-2 more rings in the next 5 years. i think cowher falls into this category more, i think he'd give it up to 5 more years to win another one and make his steelers the first team to win 6 super bowls.
the only way i could see him leaving after this season is if we went back to back and won the super bowl again. he'd go out on top that way, and leave the team in great shape for his successor (whisenhunt would be the likely choice if this happened).
my prediction is cowher stays 5 more years at the most, and if the steelers win the super bowl in any of those seasons, he will retire.
but i don't see him coming to coach state under any circumstances. plus, we still have amato and i don't see him getting fired. 8/7/2006 2:16:58 PM |

Amato will be here atleast 3 more years, more if he gets things turned around. after this year, Cower will hang it up for a while, but who knows after that.
I don't think its totally unrealistic to think that cower may coach the pack........it is unrealistic to think it will be next year, or the next. 8/7/2006 2:46:54 PM |

Some newspaper claiming Cowher will be gone next season...i know its all talk but makes me happy to hear that he might move down here earlier than we think...
" Consider Bill Cowher gone after this season. The public perception of Cowher being a dedicated family guy is a correct one. Which means, if his wife and remaining daughter at home are taking up residence in North Carolina, Cowher won't be far behind. -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette" 8/7/2006 5:31:55 PM |

If the grind is getting too hard on him, maybe he wants a job with much less stress, and will be willing to work under Amato...satisfying both sides. We can give him Monte Towe's title of "associate head coach" and he can just sit back and tell amato when he's fucking up...and recruit a little.
/saying stupid shit that will never happen 8/7/2006 7:03:42 PM |

Yeah I think we are just setting ourselves up for disappointed. I do believe he will move to Raleigh, and I believe we'll see him at some of the home games and he may even help recruit some by coming in and talking to the recruits when we have a bunch in town, but I don't know that he'll be a paid employee.
Though I have read somewhere in the past that he said he always wanted to coach here, and I believe there would be no problems either bumping Amato down to DC or buying out of his contract in order to get Cowher here.
Just imagine the recruits that would be interested in playing for a Hall of Fame-Caliber coach, haha, it sure would be nice. 8/7/2006 7:17:28 PM |

even if there was a chance cowher would even want to coach here, there's no way he would go along with us stripping amato of the job in order to create a vacancy for him. 8/7/2006 7:21:17 PM |

All I'm saying is that retiring to NC / Buying a house in Raleigh isn't an indicator of him dying to coach here.
It could happen. He is an alum, and maybe if he does retire he'll get an itching to return to the game on a less stressful level.
I think it's a distinct possibility. Not likely, but it's not as ridiculous as some of you make it seem. I don't think it'll ever happen nor am I thinking it might happen, but who knows 8/7/2006 9:03:46 PM |
