Should I buy a new one?
It was a gift for my boyfriend, I really wasn't expecting something like this to happen, now I don't really know what to do. 6/10/2006 4:12:27 AM |

You wait until you're finished mourning him (not missing, just mourning) then you get another one. Maybe call him Jr. in honor. At least he was happy while he was here. That is certainly one of the saddest things I've heard in a long while though. My condolences. 6/10/2006 7:24:06 AM |

Well, first thing I would do is demand a refund.
Don't they come with like a 90 day warranty at least? 6/10/2006 10:06:59 AM |

I'm so sorry about your puppy. I can't imagine how sad and shocking it was to lose him so soon. I think you have to decide if you are ready to love a new one. You might need some time to adjust to what happened and grieve before you are ready again. Did you speak to the breeder about the puppy's death? That is something a responsible breeder would definitely want to know about and should refund your money (although I know that's not what you're concerned with at this point). Unfortunately, sometimes you just can't predict or detect every problem 6/10/2006 10:30:03 AM |

Just don't give her the same name as the other one. I have a friend that loves cats. She had a kitten that she thought was a girl, named it Roxy, then it turned out to be a boy and she gave him away because this little girl absolutely loved him and they bonded. Then she got a girl kitten like 3 days ago and named it Roxy.
It's not cool to re-gift a name.
Sorry about your loss, did they know about the deformity before you bought him?

We adopted the dog, for a small fee, money doesn't matter.
I got a new one today, Brandy, she's a pure bred German Shephard, shes a little older 2.5 months, and larger, hopefully she'll be ok. 6/10/2006 12:55:21 PM |

German Shepherd's are great dogs! Very intelligent and playful You'll have a lot of fun with her. Plus they look all awkward with their ears that are as big as their whole head when they're young! Great choice. 6/10/2006 12:57:18 PM |

Here are pictures of Brandie! She's SUCH a good dog, she lets us know when she needs to go out (or really tries to)...she plays, she cuddles, she's the SWEETEST dog in the world!

we suspect our new girl is a terrier-shepherd mix... VERY smart, like your girl. almost has housebreaking, "sit", "stay", "come" and "drop it" after a day. 6/11/2006 1:20:39 PM |

I was told she's not an American Shepherd like everyone sees "rin tin tin" as but that the orignal breed looked like her. She came from a litter that ALL looked like American Shepherds and she was an oddball, I don't really care I love her 6/11/2006 7:01:31 PM |

well, too, she could have some Siberian Husky in her as well... due to the shape of the face and ears...
but she's cute anyways! Almost all mutts are cute
I've never heard of an American Shepherd though... 6/12/2006 12:57:29 AM |

Did you see both of the parents or get papers? Otherwise she's a mutant or not purebred. Still a good looking girl though. The people I sit for have a pure 'German' shepherd, like the ones from Germany, and it's freaking huge and wolflike. Her patchy white fur is what makes me suspicious.
The true test - once she grows into her body - will be if she has that definite G.S. gait and sloped hips and all. If not I call bullshit on this American shepherd nonsense.

Not all GSDs have the sloped hips: See http://www.olderhill.co.za/gallery.html for more pics.
I believe the greatly sloped back is more of an Americanized trait. Many different GSD's exist...this link won't let me copy/paste (copyright guard) but you can read about the differences in standard. http://www.workingdogs.com/lshaw1.htm. I don't have much time to search for other articles online, but it'll give you a basic idea.
Lutra I think you are thinking of this body style: Again, not all shepherds are bred to have this extreme sloping back (as evidenced by the first link I posted).
Furthermore, I know a couple that owns a breeding pair of GSDs. While they are much more petitely framed then any working GSD I know, they are beautiful dogs nonetheless...and the female has a short-haired black coat, with a white spot on her chest. Now I can't speak to her lineage, but she produces some of the most beautiful GSD pups I've seen.

That's a google search of American Shepherd's. Quite an arrangement of color and size.
And remember, American Shepherd =/= German Shepherd 6/12/2006 12:55:11 PM |

We saw both parents. He said, there was a chance, a SLIGHT chance that she could have had a lab sneak in there at the PERFECT time..but since all of the other puppies in the litter were perfect look, he doubted it..so he called her "the little throwback"...all of them were able to be AKC registered. 6/12/2006 2:03:45 PM |
odie All American 1001 Posts user info edit post |
you know they can have different dads, don't you? it could be a litter with multiple fathers. each puppy only has one father but each puppy could be from a different father. 6/12/2006 2:15:59 PM |
odie All American 1001 Posts user info edit post |
i am not trying to start an argument b/c i don't think it matters, but i wanted to point out 2 things: 1- the american shepherd can't be registered with akc since it isn't a recognized breed through akc 2- when i looked at the dogs under "american shepherd" on google, the pictures were of Australian Shepherds and the occasional white german shepherd. Australian shepherds are on there since they are not from australia but are an american breed.
again, not trying to argue or criticize anyone just wanted to point some things out. 6/12/2006 2:21:40 PM |
odie All American 1001 Posts user info edit post |
oh yeah, there is an American German Shepherd, which is basically just an americanized version of the german shepherd. 6/12/2006 2:25:26 PM |
Wheezer All American 4347 Posts user info edit post |
Shame on the breeder for thinking about registering her when she obviously doesn't even look like a freakin German Shepherd. Talk about the proliferation of bad genetics and bad representation of the breed. I'm not going to talk smack about you, but about the "breeder".
Kind of reminds me of a guy who came into my groom shop with a supposed pure bred pit bull puppy that he paid good money for that looked like a shepherd mix... Sucks for the guy who bought the puppy... shame on the person who bred them. 6/12/2006 3:16:50 PM |
BobbleHead All American 780 Posts user info edit post |
She cannot be registered. Thats why I got her free....the rest of them, are perfect.
I think I mentioned that there is a SLIGHT chance she had a different father...
Thanks for pointing out the obvious. 6/12/2006 11:58:28 PM |
