referreeing is a very stressful job, and when you're in front of that many more people it's magnified even more. i mean think about how many times we hear "[insert ref's name here] sucks/is biased/has it out for so-and-so" on here. i mean people take it out on these guys all the time. when you have that much money going into producing a game, you better have some well talented guys controlling it, and compensate them handsomely for all the shit they have to take.

Those football refs get destroyed all the time. And no one even gives a damn, they're just like "well, the refs are a part of the field". You're not even human, if you're an NFL ref.

a rink is much smaller than a football field and its also enclosed, plus a puck changes direction a lot faster than a football, so the chances of injury are much greater

With the exeception of the Home Plate umpire, don't the others just stand around quite a bit. I mean I played baseball and like watching it, but I wouldn't have ever thought that they got paid that much. Maybe its cuz they have to stand in the heat all summer?

It can't be that they love sports, because anyone who loves sports can point to one moment when a ref ripped their heart out. Who becomes refs? This is what I want to know.

When my brother law career is all said and done, he wants to be a ref

Most refs are people that played the game for quite awhile. When they couldn't play it anymore,

they decided to start reffing to stay close to the game. That's not always the case though. Many

just do it b/c it's fun. I mean how often do you get a job, where you go out and get to watch a

game, and be a part of it. I did it when I was 12-14 years old for reffing. I reffed some mite, squirt,

and later some pee-wee hockey. i think i got paid between 12-20 dollars per game, and that was

back in the late 90's. the games lasted roughly around an hour to an hour and a half. i know i did it

b/c i was able to do work, since i probably couldn't get work elsewhere, b/c i was too young. it was

tax exempt, b/c i didn't make over a certain amount per year. plus it was fun and i learned even

more about the game as a result. the bad thing about it was how some of the coaches took it way

too seriously. i mean i'd be out there working a mite game, which is like 5 and 6 year olds if i

remember correctly. well most of these kids had probably been skating for only a year or two, so

they weren't that good of skaters, and weren't very good at controlling their sticks. they'd bump

into each other all the time and fall over, or trip over each others sticks, and some of the coaches

and parents would scream out bloody murder b/c they thought that their players/kids were getting

checked (mite and squirt are non-checking, non-slap shot limited age groups) or getting tripped,

when it was mainly that their kids had not yet learned how to be decent skaters and puck

controllers.

I think I'd like to be a ref, not because I'd control the outcome, but because I think I could do it fairly. Some may get in it after seeing injustices done on the field, and feel they could help the integrity of the sport.

Part of the reason why NFL refs don't make that much is because the league often hires people with high-powered careers which already provide the guys with power/money so they can't be bought by the mob/other team/etc.

I think soccer refs should get paid the most. Their job is the most dangerous. You make a bad soccer call and the fans will come to your house and kill you.

We (Murphy H.S.) Had a scrimmage game at WCU a year or two ago. They quit playing us b/c we were 1A and they were 3A, and we kept beating them there... They got good since then... at any rate I was at the scrimmage and there was a "rookie" ref there. I thought about the his job and asked "what in the world would ever make you want to be a ref.?" (ppl screaming at you and such)

He said "What in the world would make you want to be a coach?"
