I realize it depends on the model, but what is the typical weight reduction people see when they strip their interior for track/whatever purpose. Personally, it seems like all that stuff doesnt weigh that much. Say you take out passenger and rear seats, parts of the dashboard, carpet, spare, doors and certain trunk parts. I cant see this being more than 200lbs?

*weigh
and yeah for the most part it looks pretty f'ing pointless to me unless it's really going to be a track only car. the weight savings really doesn't look anymore significant than your average skinny asian kid vs. a fatass 6/12/2006 4:25:58 PM |

every little bit helps
200lbs can be anywhere from 6-10 percent weight reduction on small cars. 6/12/2006 4:28:02 PM |

^my thoughts exactly, but i guess it could be deceiving how much weight there is in all the interior 6/12/2006 4:28:50 PM |

if you are going to strip interior, you better get rid of everything. seats, carpet, panels, sound deadening. keep one seat in there. a touring seat for everyday driving is good, but stick with the stock seat 6/12/2006 5:02:39 PM |

I totally agree...unless you are doing it just to impress the hot ricer chix. Then it's not just pointless, it's goddamn dumb.
For a track car only? Definitely, and if not for weight savings, definitely for safety from a flammability perspective.6/12/2006 5:37:02 PM |

My maxima's carpet probably weighed in at 60lbs. According to the listed online vehilce weight vs. what the scales at the scrap yard say, I have lost about 300lbs from my gutting the interior.
That equates to about an 8.5% reduction. 6/12/2006 9:21:23 PM |

I wouldn't judge how much weight you've taken off by just doing an 'after' weigh in at a scale. I've seen (stock) cars weigh in at hundreds of pounds less than what they should've, judging by the published data. Ahmet 6/13/2006 12:29:18 AM |

While you're at it take out the air conditioning, spare tire, stereo. It does all add up and make a difference at the track, but I bet you wouldn't want to be cruising around town in a stripped down, non-air conditioned car, with no tunes all day long. 6/13/2006 8:30:09 AM |

nah, me either. i remember reading an article in SCC where they stripped a bonestock 200SX and went from a 17 sec. 1/4 mile time to a 14. pretty impressive. 6/13/2006 9:08:11 AM |

i think the power window units in my jeep weigh around 3 lbs each... it doesn't seem like much but 12 lbs matters. and if you're pulling them out you might as well make lexan window and save an ass-ton of weight.
the spare tire should be the first thing anyone ditches along with the jack etc. thats a big hunk of weight right there. stock seats-> racing seats helps (ditch the rear) after market exhausts can save 15-30lbs
i think you'd get 200lbs easy if you are thorough in your efforts especially if you do the windows 6/13/2006 9:29:21 AM |
