Good point, but bartenders depend solely on tips for their income - I'm pretty sure the coffee-shop people are hourly 6/12/2006 7:08:18 PM |

Optional. If you're a regular, I would tip. If not, then don't. However, baristas make shitty wages and tipping helps them make a living wage.
And it's a bitch to pull an espresso shot. 6/12/2006 7:21:32 PM |

One R in barista, no apostrophe in Starbucks.
I don't believe a Starbucks barista deserves a tip. Yes, espresso is a bitch to learn how to prepare properly, but not when you're pulling shots on a superautomatic machine. 6/12/2006 7:22:59 PM |

it speaks to the whiney douchebags who end up being bartenders. it isnt our fault ur bar doesnt hire enough waitstaff to handle the load and/or that you don't want them to so you can be greedy and get decent tips for shitty service.
i guarantee you are still making a ton more than ppl working as a cashier or whatnot for mildly more difficult service.

I'LL AGREE THAT BARTENDING IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT AND WE MAKE MUCH BETTER MONEY THAN ANY BARISTA.......BUT I BET IF YOU GO TO YOUR LOCAL STARBUCKS YOU DON'T HAVE 6 PEOPLE AT A TIME AT THE COUNTER YELLING AT YOU AND COMPLAINING WHY WE SERVED THE PERSON NEXT TO THEM EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE BEEN THERE LONGER....LET ME KNOW WHEN THE DRUNKARDS START LINING UP AT THE BAR NICELY.......6/13/2006 9:55:27 AM |

im just tired of uppity servers, be it those bringing me food or pouring me drinks. i can understand being frustrated if you are having a bad night tip-wise, but dont act like i should have to tip you 50% to get decent service. 6/13/2006 11:04:22 AM |

No shit. I'm not going to fund someone else's lifestyle just because they decided to take the easy route and work in a coffee shop.

We didn't make tips when I was a barista. But I got $7 and hour, which was the most I'd ever been paid at that time, so I couldn't complain. 6/13/2006 12:51:08 PM |

I don't tip anyone unless they actually put effort foward. If the person making my coffee is nice or above what I expect (which isn't much) then ill toss them the change. But not $1 for a $2 cup.
Waiters... I'm the guy you love/hate. If you treat me right you get a fat freaking tip. You dick me around you get a penny. I don't care what the excuse is. Even if you're busy you can apologize for it etc.
The other night at Olive Garden, we had a waitress that was doing 11 tables on a friday night. Albeit half were in the cafe/bar but still. She kept my drink full. She made sure everything was okay and she didn't forget about us.
For our $30 meal she got $10.
I don't ask much. Just that you do your job with a good attitude. Male or female you get tipped the same. 6/13/2006 12:54:40 PM |

Not to hijack this thread, but...
I work at a restaurant/coffee shop. We serve sandwiches, salads, and soups... most of our shops have a full-service bar, but ours doesn't.
Anyway, on occasion, customers will leave their tables messy, this despite our having trash towers out on the floor (my immediate conclusion is that people can't find them and assume they aren't there, since they aren't super obvious). Folks who do this NEVER LEAVE A TIP. Even if you thought the service and food sucked, shouldn't you at least leave something for the person who will clean your mess? 6/14/2006 8:01:58 PM |

shrug, thats why i made the sweet tomatoes, cici's type comment. i only leave a tip now and then in those situations.
you tip for service, not for the cleanup crew, thats why busser's dont get their own tip. 6/14/2006 8:13:27 PM |

Pretty much. If GV had a tip cup (and not a contribution cup for saving the rainforests), I'd definitely tip those folks. They're so awesome, and on a regular basis. Since he's specified that money given goes towards conservation, I don't put any in, since I give to charity through other avenues. At CAJ, they should put the tip cup by where you get your drinks...not at the register, although I understand why they put it there. They fuck up my drinks too often for me to put my change in the cup before I get my drink.6/14/2006 8:16:15 PM |
