I didn't think it was that funny. Annoying, but not to a large degree. At least the AOL guy was a native english speaker. In fact, you know what.... those guys have a script that they have to read. I'd probably fuck with the guy a little bit just to make my day a little more interesting.

"3 years ago my brother died (officially missing, presumed dead - no death certificate).
At that time I was able to cancel his credit card, gas, insurance, everything except his AOL account.

They insisted that only a death certificate would allow me to cancel his account without his screen name and password.

I tried again the next day, assuming someone more reasonable would answer the phone - no luck. Nothing short of a death certificate would be accepted. At this point I let them know that the credit card AOL was charging was already cancelled. That was followed up by a letter.

4 or 5 months later I get a collection letter from AOL. By this time everything was settled with my brother's estate, and I didn't want anyone smearing his name. So again I went round and round with AOL's collection dept.

I remember one - um, rep - that said that they would find my brother. I said great, let me know when you do, as the family would like to bury him.

Maybe other people have resorted to faking death in order to get out of their AOL accounts?

After a couple weeks of this, I finally found a nice woman who was actually appalled at what I'd been thru, and promised to cancel the account and clear the charges to date if I sent a letter directly to her attention at a specific address.

She was good as her word. I sent the letter, and haven't heard from AOL collections since.

my dad is STILL trying to get $200 credit back promised to him by AOL. they gave him $71 instead of $200 so he has to go through all of the bullshit again (faxing to random places, and fax #'s they give us don't work 2 out of 3 times)

Guess they are trying to save face now.

There shouldn't be any conversation at all with the guy. Just cancel. Don't answer his questions, just say cancel. Cancel. That's it and that's all. I think this was staged.

My aunt had this issue and she blocked them from taking payments from her account. Cost her $8 (SECU), and they called her and she told them that she didn't want the account anymore, wasn't going to pay for it, tried calling but could never get someone so stopped payment.

They then told her "You won't be able to access your internet anymore" and she laughed at them and said "I couldn't access it with you guys anyway so what's the difference?" and hung up on them.

This was back when AOL was routing people to different numbers when the primary was busy so sometimes you would get long distance charges on your phone bill.

Pretty good. I got the run-around by Charter Cable one time. They promised to refund a bogus installation fee, and after seriously 50 calls or so, they sent a check, but it was not for the full amount. At that point, I just conceded. It wasn't worth wasting any more of my life to get an additional $10.

I have cancelled AOL only once, and they screwed up...it was a short phone call but what happened was that they charged me for 2 months even after cancelling. When I called them about it, the rep told me there's nothing they could do to give my money back. He/She told me to contact my credit card company and gave his/her name. I called up the credit card bank, and they refunded my money to me along with blocking all AOL transacations in the future.

They put me in to collection once in this same manner. I had cancelled via fax. (sent in a written request with all the necessary info) They sent me a postcard saying they needed more info and to call them. HAHAHA. That is what I was avoiding by cancelling via fax. I re-sent the fax again verifying that all the requested info was on there. In the mean time my credit card was re-issed because I lost it so I figured they would get the picture, as they no longer had a valid card.

The month I was looking to buy my house I get a collection letter from them. After aboud five phone calls and being sent between AOL and the collection people. They still swore up and down that the charges were valid and needed to be paid or it would show as delinqent on my report.

I sent in all documents with a complaint to the NC Attorney Generals office as well as the BBB and a few weeks later got a letter from them saying the charges were valid but they were cleared as a customer service getsture.

They would not admit fault, but they damn sure did not get that $100 they were demanding, and they were barred from reporting it on my credit since it was in dispute.
