I loved it in the fall, I don't if I caught the right DJ's because of my schedule, but during the spring I could barely tolerate it.

^^ see, that's part of the problem... the stuff played from 200-2004 for wasn't that stuff, it was actaully good music, and on the occasion that something wound up on 96.1 as well it was usually on WKNC months in advance...

WKNC just seemed like it was ahead of the curve then, now... eh...

^ 96.1 bands... (not saying anything about your bands, just showing that saying they don't play 96.1 stuff now is kinda pointless when they obviously do)

so just because Sonic Youth is on the OC and Modest Mouse gets played everywhere we have to stop playing them on 88.1? We play what people request to a certain degree and alot of times they are bands that get occational 96.1 airtime.

And how can you say that we havent been ahead of the curve now? What if "insert bands" new album becomes the hugest hit ever and I just played there last cd the other day. Would that make you happier?

^ and on that note, If we do play the Deftones then its one of the tracks never played on 96.1 (I know there are exceptions)

I stopped listening altogether a few years back when all KNC played was the worst indie music I've ever heard and the electronic music that just repeats the same 3 note beat for hours on end.

Now the only thing really worth listening to comes on Sundays... unless they have changed.

many of their dj's are lazy fucks who just play shit from their ipod.

thus: they don't ever actually play requests people have -- unless it's oneof the 100 indie songs that they have (that are mostly from at least a year ago at this point).

don't get me wrong, it's better most else you can pick up around here, but i'm always glad when i'm greensboro for the radio. WUAG and WQFS ftw.

if the only gang of four they have is the new re-makes. they lose.

thus: they lose.

not to mention:

i've gone through (many times) of having to go through a four or five songs with a dj before they actually have the song. songs that as a college radio station the SHOULD have.

so either knc's library is pathetic, or the dj's are lazy as fuck.

We should have changed the damn music format when we had the chance a few years ago.. aah that was a fun managers meeting.

At least Bradley is trying to hire a radio advisor specifically to get the station back on track with what is should be. If you judge a radio station bad because music played by it eventually winds up on 96rock, then you're standards are really pathetic. Instead try judging the station by the number of listeners or its audience. According to surveys conducted by the media authority over the last couple of years, we discovered that WKNC reached rock bottom, the lowest average listening audience it has ever had since the statistics had been kept starting a few decades ago. This was attributed to a horrible slate of DJ talent, music directors who couldn't tell good music from shit, and a shift towards an indy format that most of the listening audience didn't want to hear.

What the station SHOULD be is a representative mix of what the students on campus want to hear. The station management should conduct frequent surveys of the student body and cater to them. Afterall, they're the ones paying for it.

any student can be a dj and play what they want to play. There are a number of weekend shows that contain everything you can think of and a wide veriety of rock is played throughout the day. At night its electronic and rap. I normally have over 100 people listening on the internet during my show and that makes me happy. We dont need to play fuckin Kelly Clarkson to get more listeners because that is retarded.

WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT!!! ITS A FUCKIN COLLEGE RADIO STATION!!!!

Well, first off, I never said anything about Kelly Clarkson, and if I ever did, I would kindly ask you to shoot me in the face. I think you're skewing the point I'm trying to make.

The problems that the management staff (GM, the two music directors, the program director, the engineering guys including Will, myself as acting production manager and the promotions manager) came across was that we were losing listeners faster than we were picking them up. The decision had been made before any of our times (right around 2000), that the station was going to transition from what it had been to something a little less mainstream. For anyone who listened that far back, you can remember when the WKNC tagline was "The Best in College Radio." The change in format occured when we went to the now less popular "The Revolution." We sat and brainstormed ways to boost listening audience, while avoiding becoming a radio station that was extremely similiar to one already operating in our listening radius (96rock and G105 were the main two). It was obvious that while Raleigh had an indy rock fanbase, the selections getting spins throughout the daytime were not generating a large listening population. Not enough people out there like indy rock to justify the huge attention that format was receiving from us. Survey data did indicate that Afterhours was maintaining the highest listening base of the three weekday formats played. Underground, while popular, was too obscure for most casual rap/hip-hop listeners, and was on too late to gather a substantial listening base. Given this, we came up with the following:

A) Give the electronic format more airtime. The idea here was to turn the station over to the format drawing the biggest audience. That would practically guarentee an increase in average listeners per day. The other appealing side of this, would be that since Raleigh has no station dedicated to electronic music we would monopolize that section of the music market. We would maintain our unique image, and secure ourselves as Raleigh's electronic music station.

B) Return to the format followed during the 90s, when the music was more mainstream, but WKNC was at the height of its measurable listener base.

C) Destroy the rigid format structure and promote a mix of the three formats. Basically this would compeletly unglue the weekday constraints of Daytime=rock with a few other things, Evenings=Afterhours, Nights=Underground. DJs would be encouraged to play a pure mix of rock, hiphop, and electronic together, constantly providing something for everyone each hour.

D) Fuck it all and just play country.

Most of us wanted to push A. B also had a lot of support, but most were wary of becoming another 96rock. C was a good idea in theory, but none of us seriously thought it would work. Noone seriously considered D, but one of the promotions girls was a redneck and seriously thought the station should play country, and everyone would listen.

Unfortunately, this process was occuring when the media director was stepping down and most of the management staff graduated at the end of that year. No one picked up the format change and ran with it... too bad.

i was there with Joe Ovies when we tried to play a mix of electronica, indie hip hop, rock and metal during the day...but as other GM's came and went stuff shifted towards cmj college rock again...so i'm all for C with probably even more genres represented (like maybe even some funk, soul, classical, jazz, bluegrasss, blues and older country...nothing drastic as there are stations that play this music 24/7, but something sprinkled in) during the daytime...

though i would have no desire to hear WXYC pt 2...i mean honestly i don't understand how they can get away with playing frogs chirping or an unbalanced washing machine for 20 minutes straight...

i'd like something more in the vein of KEXP, though maybe harder

it's the dj automation (and the djs that might as well be dj automation) that makes me crazy...i don't have anything against of montreal, but after i hear "the party's crashing us" 3-4 times a day for 3 months straight it makes me a little nutty....it might be indie music, but it's still repeat radio

oh I totally agree with that. I would have to say I dont really like 50% of the music played. Thats still a pretty damn good percentage I like however. The month long ban is a great idea but would be a bitch to enforce. I did get that shitty She Wants Revenge song out of rotation the other day.

I started the training a couple years back (fresh or soph year, I don't remember) and then quit when people started talking about rotations and shit.

I don't want KNC to be XYC pt. 2, either, but it was pretty damn disheartening.

i also think that a huge problem is not a lot of the student body even KNOWS about WKNC

I used to DJ there and about 90% of the time when speaking with people their first reaction was "wait, we have a radio station?!"

it just seems that lately WKNC has become one big circle of people patting each other on the back for doing a good job and being indie and against the grain, without much care for what the listeners actually want to hear.

that being said, i know that some people are actively trying to change that - to which i applaud the effort.

i'd honestly like to see the underground on earlier tbh, they have some good shows and i like listening, but often times its way too late for me.

also - breaking down afterhours by genre would be helpful, ie: if someone is playing trance i won't fucking listen - but if they're playing breaks/house/dnb I will

and if you REALLY want to be "ahead of the curve" as far as electronic music - get some fucking dubstep up in the station. srsly.

they've got the schedule up at wknc.org

it depends on who is dj'ing - if there's someone in the booth they get to pick their own songs as long as they stay within the format (ie: I couldn't go and play some heavy metal song during afterhours). Otherwise there is a computer system set up to automatically select songs.

Yeah, one of the side ideas of going to an entirely electronic format was to take the afterhours time slots and specialize them to play a specific part of the genre different nights of the week. Like from 8-12 on Mondays play specifically house, Tuesdays trance, Wed DnB, Thursday breaks, Friday progressive/dance, ect.

most of the student body knows about WKNC. I'd venture to say everyone but the asian kids locked away in the laundry lab and the indians living in broughton know about it. it's not about people not being aware, its that they don't have a reason to care, or listen.

sorry to burst some of y'alls bubble but the regular joe college kid can't discern techno from house from electronica to trance. it's all "techno" and its all built for matrix fight scenes and video games - meaning it won't work as a single format on the radio. I'm very happy that KNC didn't go all "electronic" because that very well may have killed it.

That said, a good song is a good song is a good song. Now you're right, you can't become 96rock. Thats not what you do. But you CAN play more local acts, help promote them, and talk a little bit more. I'm not saying some 4 hour "morning zoo showgram" but tell me whats goin on, who i'm listening to (because i dont think anyone knows half the time), and give me some ideas as what to do. Guests in studio don't hurt. I go up there and I see pictures of Aerosmith, Lemmy from Motorhead, and Alice Cooper on the wall, autographed, having been IN THAT STUDIO. Where did they go? Now, i'm not talking bringing in aging rockers but a few bands on their way through raleigh helps your station AND their show.

also, talk with a little more oomph in your voice. not too far like the "HEY EVERAHBAHDAH, TRAFFIC AND WEATHER COMMIN UP ON THE 8S BUT RIGHT NOW I GOT A FEVER AND THE ONLY PRESCRIPTION IS A LITTLE BIT OF BOSTON... ONLY ON KNC"

but at the other end don't sound like you're staring at the drawer and inside is the bullet you chose years ago to end your life if it ever got to bad.

I say it needs new on-air talent, new people up top, new people down low. Radio stations are ridiculous when they shove their own head up their ass and think they can decide what people think is cool instead of going with current market trends. you're not some brave beacon of indie, you're a radio station, and you should operate like one.
