"Lowe Finally Can Focus Solely On The Wolfpack

POSTED: 6:17 pm EDT June 15, 2006
UPDATED: 6:17 pm EDT June 15, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sidney Lowe spent recent weeks juggling duties as an assistant coach for an NBA playoff team and preparing to take over at North Carolina State.

That likely means he's well-prepared for the busy months ahead at his alma mater.

Lowe officially starts at North Carolina State on Monday, about two weeks earlier than expected after completing coursework for his undergraduate degree. His to-do list includes everything from hitting the road for weeks of recruiting, getting ready to take a required test on NCAA regulations and putting his mark on a program that went without a head coach for nearly a month.

He's even thinking about his office design, complete with pictures of past Wolfpack players and plenty of red.

"When they walk into my office, I want them to know what I think," Lowe said Thursday. "It's just so the people coming in can understand how proud I am to be here and how proud I am of our history and what we've accomplished."

N.C. State hired the Detroit Pistons' assistant as its head basketball coach in May, bringing the former Wolfpack player back to the school he led to an improbable 1983 NCAA championship under the late Jim Valvano. Lowe stayed with the Pistons through the end of their playoff run while meeting with his N.C. State assistants and staying involved with the Wolfpack program from afar.

They relied on cell phones and e-mail, even meetings on airplanes while Lowe was flying to playoff games. But now, Lowe is here and he sounds ready to throw himself completely into the job.

He cleared a major hurdle by completing his undergraduate work in business administration at St. Pauls College in Lawrenceville, Va. He was about three courses short when he was introduced as Herb Sendek's successor, but he received his diploma in the past few days.

He met with about 20 reporters around a conference table on N.C. State's campus Thursday, taking on subjects such as recruiting, the program's returning players and what it's like to be back in Raleigh.

"It's been better than great," he said. "This is kind of where it started for me, other than my high school. This is where people really started to recognize me in the manner they do, even to the point that in 15 years coaching in the (NBA) and my years playing in the league and when people see me they always talk about '83."

That year, he was the point guard on the team that upset Houston and Hakeem Olajuwon on a last-second dunk by Lorenzo Charles in the championship _ probably the biggest moment in Wolfpack sports history. Lowe still sounds surprised almost how many people can tell him exactly where they were during that game and the impact it had on them.

"People ask me, 'Don't you get tired of talking about that?'" he said. "Never. I mean never. How can I get tired of talking about that?"

Now Lowe is getting ready to focus on recruiting, including the players the Wolfpack had signed for 2006-07: 6-foot-3 guard Larry Davis, and 6-7 forwards Dan Werner and Dennis Horner.

All three were offered conditional releases from their commitments after the coaching change, and Davis has said he plans to attend Seton Hall. Werner is undecided, while Horner has said he still plans to play for the Wolfpack. Lowe would not comment on Davis' status and said he is still talking with Werner.

Lowe played four seasons in the NBA before moving on to coaching, rising to become the head coach at Minnesota and Memphis. He has a career record of 79-228 and resigned at Memphis after the team's 0-8 start in the 2002-03 season.

He doesn't sound worried about adapting to the college game, an idea confirmed by a recent call from Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. That's when the Hall of Fame coach _ and now down-the-road rival _ told him that he was still learning because the game is constantly changing.

"I'm going to be learning the entire time," Lowe said. "That's just coaching.""

I see coach K called him. Think Roy Boy or Prosser did the same?? Ive always respected K as a coach even if he does have the refs in his pocket and throw some F-bombs around

i think i even saw that Lowe and K met in person over at K's office at Duke. i've always respected Coach K. i've never understood fully the hatred for him as a person. i understand why some would hate him as an opposing coach that wins a lot, but he has always been great to State, and a good person as a whole. i still have images in my head from when he helped Valvano up and down the steps during his ESPY speech. Valvano said he really showed him how valuable of a friend he was during those final few months.

If he fails it won't be for lack of effort - and hopefully when we lose it won't be for the teams lack of effort.

I try to look at the good, but I don't see much for this year.

NIT would be great if you ask me.

I don't see us finishing ahead of Clemson.

what are you going to do about it? yep. nothing.

Look, I understand Herb improved the program. He was also aware that this coming year was not going to be his best - and he jumped ship with more money and less pressure looking like the rationale.

If Herb had stayed this upcoming year would not have been as good as last year.

I really like how Lowe is saying all the right things...how proud he is to be here, how he wants a "family" atmosphere and is trying to get past players to come around, how this is his dream job ect...

even if we do suck next season, I can see the passion, and that's great.

My point exactly - 3 of the starting 5 would have had practically zero game experience

Atsur - yes
Grant - yes
Fells - no
McCauley - no
Costner - no

i dont care what you think herbs reasons were for leaving.

im not going to discuss nc state basketball with you if you honestly think lowe is taking over a program that is in a comparable situation as to what herb took over.

V I think Simmons would be back if herb was still here, but no way to know

^^simmons would have still went to the NBA,

and it's very hard to predict how any team will do in june. Look at last year's carolina team, all the experts were saying that .500 in the league would be great for them, and look what happened.

I said that where?

If you think Lowe is taking over a program that is in the same situation it was last summer then there's no point discussing the program.

which is retarded enough, but then you asked

which implies you think lowe is stepping into a situation that is similar to what herb stepped into.

So just how bad was Herb's situation when he came in?

Did he have 2 recruits jump ship, a rising sophomore leave, a returning player face deportation hearings and a player decide to focus on baseball?

So whats your point? Herb came into a program that was worse than what Lowe is stepping into?

I'll concede that to a point - but to think Lowe is taking over a solid program is just crazy talk.
