Just finished reading this...written pretty well, but I gotta say this woman's book seems to be more on how an emotional/self esteem problem grew into an alcohol problem which made her emotional/self esteem problem worse. and how she says she's not an alcoholic b/c she didn't drink alone is beyond me...there's other things to alcoholism besides drinking alone.
anyway! it's at least a decent and easy read in my opinion, so i'd recommend it to any girl, or guy for that matter, that is interested in how alcohol plays as a social companion in our society from a person who had it rule their life and then overcome it--from the first drink in high school to the wild parties in college. in other reviews people seem to get bored once she gets to college...i've seen some people call her and her friends antics while drinking "tame"
it's sprinkled with some research about drinking as well...which i found more interesting than the story itself.

I saw this woman getting interviewed where this interviewer tried to make her feel ashamed and blow everything out of proportion.
From what I saw on the interview (not gonna read the book), this girl didn't have a true support system in her life (or any guts or self-esteem), and she had no perspective. "Oh, I got drunk and slept with a guy I didn't like. I'm so ashamed. The only thing I can do to feel better about myself is get drunk and sleep with a different guy." God, it's not like she killed anybody.

exactly... parents didn't seem to be involved at all...well they were, but just kinda sat on the sidelines and let her do whatever.
but aside from the story...it was written well. she's obviously got talent...but unless she has some more drama in her life or picks back up the bottle i don't forsee another book by her.

since when is drinking alone a sign of alcoholism??? 6/16/2006 11:31:16 PM |

drinking alone doesn't necessarily mean going out, or staying in, by yourself and drinking, though it can...hiding or sneaking extra drinks around or from family and friends is considered "drinking alone".

oh, so "drinking alone" is being embarrassed/reclusive about your drinking?
that's stupid IMO. drinking is like a lifestyle choice. i agree that once you reach the point where you have to hide it, you might have a problem. otherwise its just a great way to kill time. 6/17/2006 12:06:32 AM |

I'm a guy. I bought the book and I've read ~ 1/3 of the book in random parts. It is really well written. I like the book more for the insight into the life of a 20's something college female than for the alcohol addiction part. The book is pretty interesting and easy to read.
A better first person account of alcoholism is "Dry" by Augusten Burroughs. That book is really entertaining and enlightening at the same time. 6/17/2006 5:08:38 AM |
