I am looking to get a new laptop. Something small and easy to carry around and I don't want to spend a lot of money. Dell used to have one for around $800 but they stopped making it and now their cheapest starts at $1300. I was hoping someone on here could point me in the direction of a good, inexpensive laptop. I want to spend around $800 and it doesn't have to be anything special. Don't mind getting an apple but I don't know much about them so any advice in that direction would be helpful as well. Thanks

Yeah, if you want a laptop under 1000 that's not crap, a dell slickdeal is probably your best bet. The macbooks, starting at 1049 education price (with free ipod and 100 dollars off a GOOD printer of your choice) are a good deal too, but it's hard to compare to a dell slickdeal.

they're better in SOME ways...depends on what you want to do with it...since the new macs can run windows, the difference gap has narrowed and the value for macs (imo) has gone up

Yeah, it does depend on what you want to do with them. The macbooks are very nice little portable machines and come very feature-laiden for the price. That being said, you could probably get a better spec'd (but most likely heavier and not so well supported) dell for less.

i love my mac & it doesnt have the annoying problems i had with pc's


i got the word, power point, excel package for it at the bookstore for like $50 so i can create documents readable on pc's

also its way more reliable & better for more creative things like picture storing and sharing & video editing too-- i created a video out of music clips & pictures and had no idea what i was doing but the program was easy to use & the help feature was ACTUALLY helpful, turned out better than i expected

Windows XP is reliable...much more reliable than MacOSX in my personal experience.

What's the point in getting a Mac if you're gonna use Microsoft software on it?

Also, it's easier to get thin Windows laptop for cheaper than a Mac.

Get a Lenovo 3000 V100. They are Lenovo's new "consumer" level laptops. Starts at $1,099 ... and decent specs to boot. Comes with latest Intel Core Duo processor (which is an incredible improvement over the Pentium M).

I've personally tested them in our labs and they are just as fast if not faster than similarly spec'd systems. It's basically a ThinkPad with different clothes on. Plus, you get Lenovo(IBM's) great customer service.

Yeah, so are you likening Dell and IBM to Ford and GM and Lenovo to Honda/Toyota? I mean lenovo does have US located support services while many other manufacturers outsource.
