I know about UPS, but does anyone know of other jobs that offer tuition assistance? I phoned one of the counselors at the career center, but she hadn't even heard of UPS's benefits! Thanks for your help!

Mm, I seem to remember my brother working at Harris Teeter and they had some benefits. Something about having to work so many hours at a place and they would give you $1000 a year or something.

Major companies are probably gonna be the ones to give you tuition assistance. No small business is going to let you do that. So find a place that is near NCSU and where you live and ask/research them.

I work at UPS specifically for this, as far as part time benefits it is the number one rated company, 2 and 3 I believe are walmart and fedex so those would be the two places i checked.

^ditto. been there about a year and a half on the midnight shift.

Full medical, dental, vision.

$2000/year tuition.

Easy to make $10/hr after three months, and overtime pay for any shift over 5 hours. And all the overtime you could want available if you work midnight.

Be a supervisor (again, for a non-idiot), which is easy after 6 months to 1 year, and tuition help goes up to 4000/year and ~1300/month salary with basically the same benefits.

And it's not as hard there as people will tell you.

Which means pretty much everyone on outbound curses me every day.

But it's ok. I hate them too

Thanks for your input, everyone. I had applied to UPS and gone through the tour, and frankly, the way the job was described, it sounded insane. The tour guide said that temperatures could reach 125 in the loading docks, that no breaks were allowed during the four hour shift (except for the generous allowance of time for you to reach down and take a drink from a water bottle to hydrate yourself) and 2 out of 3 people quit in the first couple weeks. What do those of you working at UPS think about this? The benefits are great, but I was wondering if the job would just wipe you out for much productive studying. Also, which shift do you think is best? It seems that the midnight shift would be cooler during the summer, but would I be able to then switch to twilight shift when the fall semester began? And how much do they pay for the overtime that was mentioned as frequent on the midnight shift, time and a half? I would appreciate some candid advice from the people actually working there, or who have worked there.

I started at UPS about a year ago, I don't currently work there due to an injury which prevented me from doing the job (it also screwed me out of an entire year of school... but that's a whole different story).

The job itself wasn't that bad, yes it's physical work, yes it gets hot... just don't be a pussy about it and you'll do fine. Benifits are great, pay is decent after 90 days (and if you make "skilled" labor, which is a no brainer it gets better). Go into the job expecting to work everyday, 5 days a week for however long you're there. I didn't have any problem taking a few days off here and there (long weekends, etc) as long as I gave them a healthy amount of forewarning.

My biggest complaints about the company were some of the managers. They'll flat out lie to your face and ignore things you've told them (which really pissed me off since most of the stuff was about what doctors had told me about the level of work I was suppose to do with the injury). Most coworkers were really good, but a few abused the system and slacked off letting others do their work for them, that pissed me off too, and it always seemed to be the guys who have been there for years... anyway... if I hadn't gotten injured I would most likely still be working there today. I can't say I "enjoyed" the job, but it wasn't bad overall and what really kept me coming back were the other guys I was working with, it really was a team effort.

I work on Red Belt usually between goldsboro and the oh so dreaded willow grove load. It does get hot in the summer and so yes the midnight is better. Typically you ahve to have been there for a year before they are receptive to you switching shifts unless you have a fairly valid reason, school probably not being one of those since they tell you beforehand dont take any 8am classes if you are gonna work midnight. The guy giving the tour is supposed to make it sound intense because they want to weed out people who are slackers and arent going to work. Its really not all that bad most nights, but some nights it does plain wear your ass out. If its any indication I just got home and its 4am so there are some fairly late nights. It is best to bring your own water bottle, its not that they wont allow you to get water, but sometimes getting out of your truck when wanting to get some is near impossible with the boxes all piled up around the entrance to the truck lol. Supervisors are hit and miss although most of the midnight ones at least are fairly cool, cant vouch for twilight. Our turnover on midnight is around 30-40% right now I think and yes most of those are people who dont make it past the first few weeks. Typically you can count on being pretty sore and worn out for a couple of weeks, once you adapt to the sleep schedule and your body gets used to using the muscles needed for the job it gets a lot easier. It's more of a mental thing than a physical thing because there are chicks there who will outload half the guys up there no problem. Its not a job for everyone, but if you have a good work ethic and arent someone who quits easily when things are a little tough then it shouldnt be that bad. Again my experience is from the midnight shift, which is cooler in the summer and the amount of volume on that shift is less as well. Just have to deal with working all night which is the trade off. Also midnight runs sunday-thursday night so you will always have friday and saturday nights off. Twilight runs M-F. Hope this helps.

The UPS hub is up on Atlantic near New Hope Church.

Hours for twilight are advertised as 5:30 to 9:30, however they vary quite a bit depending on the night.

midnight typically starts at 11 and there are times twilight people are still working cleaning up the last few trucks so thats about the latest. Tuition assistance you have to have been hired on or before the start date of that semester to qualify. You must also be working there at the end of the semester in order to get the money. You also must have passed the classes. Starting pay is 8.50/hr goes to 9 after like 30 days iirc and if you can memorize some shit and take a pickoff/sort test you get another dollar. So you can go from 8.50 to 10 in like 30 or 90 days again I cant remember exactly lol

Thanks for the detailed responses everyone. UPS looks very good, as long as it isn't exhausting. What are the details on Home Depot's tuition assistance and Tuition Painters? Anyone here worked for either? Also, has anyone worked for FedEx? I'm wondering if they have a hub in Raleigh, because I haven't found help wanted postings by them for this area. This input is great, and far more helpful than what is available on the internet.
