So I'm moving back towards Charlotte in about a month and am naturally looking for the best rate. Does anyone know of any particular coupons/ student specials/ tricks for moving the cheapest?
I've acquired too much shit living in my apt for 2 years to easily move in a pickup truck. But I'll only need a 10' or maybe 14' truck if the rates are similar enough. I've searched websites and know to book early and avoid the weekends for the best rates.
Any other tips out there? I'll be moving around July 27, around 150-160 miles to Mooresville. The best rates I've found are ~135 through U-Haul or $70/day +25cents/mile through Triangle. Of course, I'd have to return this truck in Charlotte which would make the total distance around 200 miles, $95, and a bit more of a hassle returning the truck.
I found an Internet Truck Rental coupon for Budget which brings the quote from $159 to $144.

When I was pricing stuff from Wilmington to Roanoke, Penske came in a little cheaper. I believe they have 10% off for booking online, but the big saver was their standard rental for my trip was 2 days instead of 3, and I never had any intention of using a full 3 anyway. Last time I rented a truck, I think I used Enterprise, and they were way cheaper than anyone else from Raleigh to Wilmington. Check those 2 companies, but otherwise your rates aren't unreasonable. 6/19/2006 8:04:27 PM |

I personally recommend Penske, if for nothing else the quality of their equipment, which is usually first rate. 6/19/2006 8:13:59 PM |

It may be a little high. I know, for example, that you can rent a U-Haul for $20-40/day +49 cents per mile. 6/19/2006 9:16:03 PM |

I remember I rented a U-haul once a few years ago for a move from Raleigh to Goldsboro, and the jackass was adamant about me returning "his" truck to his location, so I told him to cut my rate in half or kiss my fuckin ass about getting the truck back (I was just gonna return it in Goldsboro), and he did 6/19/2006 11:18:26 PM |

thumbs up for penske. used them for my in town move a few weeks ago ($20 for 24 hours + 80 cents a mile). the truck was brand new, had 2500 miles... great experience.
thumbs down for u-haul. used them last year and the truck had like 300,000 miles and broke down as soon as i got it home and again after i drove ~30 miles. the kicker is that when i called the service number after the truck wouldn't start and they told me it was my fault and i'd have to cover service costs (i had to use AAA). i'll never use u-haul again, no matter how good a deal it is.

I used a U hall for an in town move, made two trips with the mid size truck traveled around 10 miles and it was 42 something, and of course i had to put 5-6 bucks to replace the gas. I wen tto the U hall on Capital, everything went smoothly to me. 6/23/2006 5:13:32 PM |

I'm moving from all my shit from Greensboro to Raleigh. I went on Penske's site and got quoted $250 for the smallest truck.
Good deal or not?

for the age thing, I am not sure about a minimum age to rent one, maybe 18? But there was an additional charge when I rented from Budget for the driver being under 24. 7/18/2006 5:14:35 PM |

the last time i moved was from hickory to raleigh and I used penske.
the only bad thing was that they did not have the right truck at the pickup, but they made it better by giving me a free upgrade to a bigger truck they had there.
The truck seemed like it was brand new. I picked it up on friday and paid 150 for unlimited use until sunday. There was a black streak on one of the sides that I didn't see when i picked it up, and when I returned it, I just told them that it was already there, and they were cool with that. 7/18/2006 10:57:02 PM |
