ok i'm doing a paper on an ethnic grocery store, and my partner and i chose grand asia market. i've been there before, and went there today, too. i started writing the paper, finally, and discovered that i really should've written down the types of produce they have. so if anyone knows any specific fruits or vegetables or anything that they have, please share. i know some stuff, but i figure the longer the lists the better, right? 6/20/2006 5:34:48 PM |

You should do one of the other ones... like in greensboro, grand asia is the bomb compared to those places... I have to drive Pieng to raleigh, or charlotte to keep her happy. Its all organised crime either way you look at it though. 6/20/2006 6:31:05 PM |

I just went to a new asian grocery pretty similar to Grand Asia, it's close to the Sam's club near here. Maybe someone knows the name and road, it's where the cheap gas is. Anyway, it's bigger than Grand Asia and the prices are similar, plus it's near Taco Bell. 6/20/2006 11:06:33 PM |

arg i'm supposed to get this paper to 12 pages with my partner, and so far we have.... 6. 8 if you count the two pages of pictures. still, 4 pages off wtf. 12 pages to describe a grocery store is complete bullshit. 6/20/2006 11:44:31 PM |

Umm be like there are lots of wee metal bolts holding the shelves together. I bet they are made in china, too. it smells like *insert gross smell here*. I dunno, my asian market smells like ass and is dirty as hell, so I stick to bottled things like oyster sauce and whatnot. 6/20/2006 11:47:54 PM |

For some reason, I was nominated to talk to the professor about how I thought the length requirement was too long. I did my best, but he wouldn't budge.
If I recall correctly, everybody made the requirement though. Just keep writing...talk about the other patrons and the employees, discuss how they handle transactions, signs outside, parking, cleanliness, products, product grouping, etc...
The trick is to not be comparative. Just observe and report as if you'd never entered a "normal" grocery store in your life.
I think I filled up space by describing the other patrons and employees in serious detail and listing ingredients in the products and where they were made and who made them, etc... I also had an hour long conversation with the cashier and he told me a lot about his religion, his favorite foods, and his favorite recipes and when he preferred to eat them...fuck he told me a lot of unsolicited shit (All I said was, "I'm observing a grocery store for a project..." and he just started sharing.)6/21/2006 12:39:18 AM |

so don't be comparative? there was another website that had an outline based on what a different teacher wanted, and it said to compare. we did the whole paper without comparing, except noting extreme differences, but then at the end i'm putting in a paragraph about how it differs. aaand thanks for the good ideas!: how they handle transactions, signs outside, parking, cleanliness, products, product grouping.. 6/21/2006 1:01:28 AM |

Oh well, good luck with getting yours done!

Here is what 99% of all asian stores look like...
Isle A: Produce Typical vegetables are tomatoes, bok choy, mint, basil, limes, lemon grass, bean sprouts, cilantro, green onions, taro, ginger, carrots, daikon, onions, mustard greens, chinese cabbage, napa cabbage, garlic, egg plant, oyster mushrooms, portabello mushrooms, shitaki mushrooms, bamboo, the list goes on and on.
Typical fruits are lemons, limes, asian pears, mangos, peaches, young coconut, kiwi, papaya, various types of oranges, plums, apples, and whatever is in season pretty much.
Isle B: Canned Goods When I say canned goods, I mean LOTS of canned goods. Usually two or three grocery isles dedicated to canned foods. Asians can almost all fruits and vegetables and rotten shrimp.
Isle C: Spices/Sauces This list would go on forever too. They have a sauce for literally every dish. You do not cook an asian dish without using atleast one type of sauce.
Isle D: Frozen foods/Meats Frozen stuff usually include dumplings, various types of rolls, various meats, deserts, and veggies... and my favorite: spinach flavoured ice cream
Usually consists of typical meats like beef, pork, chicken, and sea creatures. The secret to the unique asian store smell is their seafood department. You can smell it when you walk in the front door.
Isle E: Candy My favorite ilse. Candy ranges from the sweet, to the sour, to the bitter, and even reaches to the point of salty fish taste.
Isle F: Rice Pallets and pallets of rice. Short grain, long grain, and sweet/sticky rice.
Isle G: Other The random pots, plates, toys, ear pickers, utensils, medicine, herbs, and rubber sandals. 6/21/2006 8:12:13 AM |

its not that long, if you are detailed about it or even if you are not, its not all about the grocery store, it has alot of other aspects that you need to cover. I wrote a 23 pager on this one after I was done, and was concerned about the length.6/21/2006 8:32:49 AM |
