I'm living in a 1400 sq foot apt. 2 bedroom 2 bath. Have a backporch.
My roommate and I are interested in getting a cool pet to have around the apt. We want something that's friendly towards people. Don't want a dog or cat, something out of the ordinairy.
Any suggestions? I've thought about sugar gliders or ferrets. What's some other less known pets? 6/20/2006 7:40:05 PM |

A supersize cockroach named Pedro. Or Gregor if you're trying to impress the pseudo crowd. You can teach him to deliver beer and get drunk. Possibly at the same time. 6/20/2006 7:44:49 PM |

Just remember that trained parrots have a giant can opener of a face. Are you sure you want that on your shoulder so close to your face?
I have fallen asleep before and my Quaker has taken a dislike to some of my freckles and surgically removed them with his beak.

Owning a parrot is equivalent to owning a 2 year old child. They're extremely smart, tend to speak when you really don't want them to and say things you don't want them to, prone to temper tantrums, bite, need a lot of attention, expensive housing, costly toys that need to be changed out constantly due to use, and expensive medical care.
My husband and I share our space with 5 different birds and they're just not for everyone. And it's really sad when someone who is not cut out for them decides to bring one into their home and then isn't cut out for it because many parrots react to it just as you'd expect a child to react to being ripped from the only home it has ever known. I really do not recommend a companion bird as a 'pet.' 6/21/2006 12:12:25 AM |

I don't recommend quaker parrots, unless you are prepared to deal with the noise. They are attention whores, and unless you're in the room with them, they will squawk all day to get your attention.
I've heard sugar gliders require a lot of attention, too.
Rabbits seem to be a popular pet lately. 6/21/2006 2:41:58 AM |

I think the key is, it doesn't matter where you live or how much money you have to spend on it now, can you keep it and afford it in the long run? It really pisses me off when irresponsible people get pets (exotic or otherwise), keep them a year or two, then graduate or change jobs and have to dump them. And then they end up in classifieds. 6/21/2006 8:24:00 AM |

At one point I really wanted a prairie dog, and you can actually get domesticated ones...but due to some kid getting monkey pox from a prarie dog they are all on quarentine right now and you can't buy/sell/trade/move them at all. Same thing goes for meerkats and most other african mammals. 6/21/2006 12:50:53 PM |

That kinkajou looks pretty fuckin sweet.
I've had an ostrich before. She was fuckin sweet. She'd eat out of your hand and everything.
Chinchillas suck, they're dirty and aren't really that "people-attached"ish.
Potbellied pig sounds pretty cool.
Monkeys, chimps, etc are horrible pets. Once they hit puberty they're hard as hell to control.
Fuck birds.

I had a hedgehog and she was awesome. She loved to run around in one of those large rodent balls, and I let her run around without as well. She would do this defensive spaz thing when I gave her a grape - she'd lick it once and start foaming and licking that onto her spikes. As long as you don't startle it, you can pick the hedgehog up just fine. I think they're illegal to sell in NC now, but I've seen things where you buy the cage and get a hedgehog free.
Ferrets are awesome. They're high-maintenance though if you don't want your place smelling really bad. But they're really fun to play with, and the two I had were so hilarious when playing together. But they're in a new home now (99.9% adopted anyway). Go to craigslist though if you're interested in ferrets - I've seen a couple others available on there.
Just make sure to research really well before getting an animal. I heard about one guy that got a hedgehog and fed it lettuce all the time, and of course that killed the poor thing since they're supposed to have proteins (I fed mine cat food). Ferrets are way too often neglected or mistreated.
Really though if you want a pet that will attach itself to you just get a really "cool" dog or a rabbit. Either way you want to make sure that animal is handled a lot, and well, so that it does learn to adore you. And please make sure this isn't just a fad thing and the animal will have a home once you and your roommate split up and move on with your lives. 6/21/2006 3:12:34 PM |
