umm....guess I was askin if HI207 was a tough class?

HI251 with Middleton for a 5 wk course is pretty demanding.....2 lec a day, form test each week, 2 papers, a 5 pg and a 3 pg and then a final being same as midterm.

I'm signed up for this class in hopes of it being easy and cause it takes care of two requirementson my Degree Audit...its a history and a cultural or foreign history or soemthing requirement

i had HI207 last summer with Detreville. It was pretty easy I thought. The entire grade was based on 3 tests as far as I remember.

hi207.... the topic is interesting but dr parker is an asshole & has very high expectations... i also didn't find him to be very helpful outside of class

I had Dr. Parker for HI 207 distance ed. last summer. The grade is based off two tests and the final, all of which are mainly based on essays (with a few multiple choice thrown in). IIRC, the essays tend to consist of comparisons between cultures or discussions of the readings. The lectures can be good if you're interested in the material, but he is not exactly a dynamic professor. Overall, I didn't think it was a bad class, it's just easy to let the reading/lectures pile up.

yeah, i'm in 207 right now with detreville. she's a great teacher, you can really tell she enjoys what she's teaching. its not to hard either, just 3 tests, each 100 points, and the third has 25 extra points for cumulative stuff. the material is easy if you think its interesting.

I had him my first semester in school (or maybe it was second...). He was tough, but I didn't think he was a jerk.

not to generalize about females, but they more often have better notes and handwriting than me

i could make notes on your notes and send them back if there was anything i thought i could add

do any of you have the old exams/tests??? I am horrible at essays and writing one or how many ever during a 75min time period is going to be pretty tough for me......does he (Parker) just look for the fact you covered the material and whatnot????

this is one of my last two classes for my degree.....other is ENG331.....with Trunzo

count me in... just watched the first three video lectures... first one was rather boring, but they got more interesting after that. this would be a great class if there were no exams (at least it is interesting) but there is way too much material to remember. i hope he doesn't expect us to memorize everything for the exams.

speaking of which, in the lectures he said he would be emailing the outlines and study guides to everyone, but he hasn't done it yet and I haven't been able to get in touch with him...

from what i can gather, no we cant use any notes, and the test will be primarily essay. i started to take notes but then realized it was a waste to copy lecture notes that he has, and just emailed him asking for copies of the outline so i can add notes on printed copies of that. parker hasn't gotten back to me yet, but i'll post here what he says to that idea

^ are you kidding... have you seen the last lecture before test 1? he did a sample question and in it, he posed the question and then proceeded to point out a primary source, pick one paragraph from it, and stated five distinct points from just that one paragraph, and he didn't even fully answer the question.

knowing some shit is one thing, knowing that sort of detail on 15 primary sources that you have spent a week on in a summer session is an entirely different thing... two lectures before the first test he states that he wants us to say stuff like "according to 'sargon's autobiography......'" i have no problem picking out the general theme of primary sources, but to have to know detailed information from all of them in the timespan of a week...

bren... i don't know. i was feeling that way, but a friend said that all you really have to do is know the study guide he sends out before the test and then know the primary sources enough to use them as facts in the essay. the study guides are quite substantial (56 terms for us to know, and i think 15 primary sources) as some people have said, detreville may be better but i'll let you know after the first test is graded...

i didnt take parker because of what people said on school tool(http://www.thewolfweb.com/school_instructor.aspx?department=HI&instructor=2794)

it seemed on school tool detreville was the best...this class does require a lot of notes per class, and a ton of studying

i studied my ass off and got a solid b which i was happy cause going into the final exam i had a 78 average, and i write good as a mf

[Edited on July 11, 2006 at 11:46 AM. Reason : got like a 112/125 on the final exam]

i definitely wouldn't NOT take the class...unless you are not into history...if this is a particular era of history you like then take it

just scheduled my appoinment with Johanna Donovan (515-2265) to take my first exam Friday, @ 11am.

she told me to be prepared for the exam, she said his essays were not easy.

weird...there are hardly any in-between reviews of this guy

pickaprof.com, ratemyprofessor.com, and school tool - people either love him or hate him

and some of the grade distributions showed more A's for parker than detreville!

i have him in the fall

- Memorize the list of key terms he gives on the study guide (the multiple choice is what nails most people)
- Before you even BEGIN to write your essay, take a minute and sketch out an outline of the key points...he likes his essays structured and coherent. If you write on some topic in your essay, move to another one, then remember something else about the earlier topic, then definitely put it in...just don't drop it in out of context.

Just keep in mind that most points are lost on the multiple choice (all of the above, none of the above...etc) and that he has a rubric for each essay for points that he wants to see covered. You don't see the rubric, but if you are missing something, you will lose points.

Good luck.
