I know this might be a longshot, but im trying to fly out to wisconsin on the 8th. Its not that far away which is obviously why the prices are steeper, but I'm trying to fly for like 150-200 round trip. Is there any particular technique to getting a flight that cheap without jacking the plane? 6/21/2006 9:11:44 PM |

^ I'm in the travel industry and that's the only way it's possible.
Airfare is not as easily discounted as lodging. 6/21/2006 9:13:51 PM |

when using sites like priceline or expedia, how long in advance do the cheapest flights/hotels need to be booked? 6/22/2006 4:44:52 PM |

flying standby is insanely stupid unless you are on an airline employee's buddylist / buddypass list. 6/22/2006 4:48:42 PM |

usually want to book 14+ days before the flight
Tues. and Thurs. are usually the cheapest days to fly from my experience and Southwest has decent fares.
Every Tues. Southwest has a new featured destination which discounts almost all flights to and from that airport.
They also have a DING service that you can download that alerts you on specials that last a few hours. 6/22/2006 4:49:57 PM |

question: I've got to go out to san diego at the beginning of november to visit my brother. When should I buy the airfare - now, (~$300) or wait for a Southwest Ding or something like that last minute? 6/23/2006 8:08:35 AM |

I would wait---san diego is bound to have a deal to raleigh in the next 4 months. But 300 is not a bad price. 6/23/2006 8:38:47 AM |

Sometimes I've found you can get a better fair for booking directly with an airline instead of through a site like Orbitz or Travelocity (although they are normally very good).
Case in point, I'm travelling to Alaska next month, and the location I'm going to, one leg of the trip has to be done through Alaska Air. Orbitz and the other sites could only get me a price of around $1000, whereas when I when directly to Alaska Air's site I was able to get my flight for $860 after fees and taxes. Maybe this strategy only applies to going to more remote locations. 6/23/2006 10:29:13 AM |
